LANCASTER, Pa. -- The School District of Lancaster is defending a plan that groups students according to their race.

In December, McCaskey East High School placed its junior class in different homerooms based on race and gender. Each class is led by a home room teacher of the same race and gender who serves as a role model.

Huge Hispanic immigrant population in Lancaster now IIRC. Maybe 30%? And since the Amish go to their own schools and only through the 8th grade, the public schools are that much more skewed away from white.

Sounds like affirmative action is going to be needed to match students given that there is an excess of nice white ladies and a shortage of Hispanic men in the teaching profession. Or you can just have 100 boys in one homeroom, maybe.

its got to be about 90% white/caucasian....very few blacks there and I’ll bet not very many asians.....so what this is is a special class for a very, very small minority and the rest ....I’ll bet they decided to separate genders just to make their scheme look good.....

I like the idea and it has nothing to do with being a racist in any manner. Different people learn in different manners. It is obvious that boys learn in different manners than girls. The same applies to race. People right away want to scream racism but as long as equal amounts are spent each child, the subject material is the same and the test results improve then what the hell is your problem? It is all about the final grades that these children earn. These kids know that white people are different from black people and vise versa. Kids also know boys are different from girls. It is what it is and it has nothing to do with racial inequalities and becomes a racial issue when do gooders try to step in and force their liberal left wing opinions on people. I see nowhere that the kids complained and that is what it is all about educating children. As a master teacher i find it a inventive way to try to improve these children's learning process. Plus if you believe in self esteem it is wonderful idea.
