PARKLAND, Fla. -- A South Florida doctor has died after authorities say she was accidentally strangled by a electronic neck massager on Christmas Eve.
Kenneth Gegerson called 911 after finding his wife's body on the bedroom floor next to the neck massager. Paramedics pronounced 37-year-old Michelle Ferrari-Gegerson dead at the scene. Authorities believe her necklace got caught in the massager and it quickly tightened around her neck.
According to Broward Sheriff's authorities, Ferrari-Gegerson spent the evening wrapping gifts and getting ready for work while using the massager to relieve neck pain.
Detective did not specify the type of massager, saying it's still an active investigation.

Well, there actually have been a handful of cases like this in Japan. Apparently a particular model of foot massager ended up killing a handful of users there when it was improperly used as a neck massager. The massaging nodules caught caught shirt collars, ties, etc. and the powerful motor used in the device quickly choked the victims.

That said, I’m skeptical in this case. I would think a device purpose-designed to be a neck massager would have a much less powerful motor and wouldn’t be likely to snag necklaces, etc. as the mis-used massager in Japan.
We’ll see, though. At any rate, RIP to this poor woman!

I agree. Who could let themselves be strangled by a massager when all she had to do was pull the plug.

electric massagers don’t kill people. people kill people.
