I do think outside the Court of Public opinion. I am a retired Police Officer but have been off the job 16 years. I never heard of the Tueller drill and I hope and wish to think there is much more to this than is shown such as a prior deal from the man that was shot. If he were just walking down the street carving something this police officer should never had got close enough to him to be attacked without some other circumstances involved. I am sure it will all come out but even in my mind there is something wrong here and I hope to hear all the facts.

If cops were actually on the borders running out illegals and drug runners, you would not hear any complaints. They are not. The people are the enemy now. I can defend myself better with the 2nd and no help from the cops than without the 2nd and cops, regardless of their demeaner.

I thought it was MS13.

I will be happier knowing I can actually identify the criminals instead of guessing which ones are trying to kill me.

The Tueller Drill is what is used when justifying shooting a knife wielding attacker within 21 feet, because an attacker can cross that distance in less than 3 seconds. We used to call it the hole.

What is being ignored by some is the officer lacked probable cause for the stop, never identified himself as a police officer, and was already drawing his firearm before he approached the victim.

The Seattle PD already took his badge and gun. He is done.

MS15 are so much worse that state-run media is afraid to even mention them.

"It alway's puzzles me why people get worked up because a cop or cops shot someone five times or thirty times? If five cops draw guns and shoot, it had better be thirty shots fired. That's their policy in most cases, fomed in public and closed sessions."

Ah yes, the "I was just following orders defense"...

Back about 65 years ago some guys who liked to wear spiffy Black and Red uniforms tried "that" defense...

It didn't work out well for them...

I’m with you, it will all come out and the facts in this case will be known.

The Tueller Drill refers to the findings of Sergeant Dennis Tueller, of the Salt Lake City, Utah Police Department.

“Thus what has become known as the Tueller Drill proved that if your weapon is not in your hand, you are in danger from a rushing criminal with a knife twenty-one feet away. Most people covered the twenty one feet in one and one half seconds for an average speed of fourteen feet/second.”

The officer had his weapon in his hand upon leaving his vehicle and his approach to the subject. Training protocol according to the Teuller Drill says to do this exact thing. The court of public opinion see this as evidence of premeditated murder.

The right to carry a knife doesn’t mean that brandishing the knife in public is legal. The suspect was observed using the knife on the open street by the officer. The officer would have been derelict if he hadn’t made an attempt to detain the subject. The court of public opinion believes there was no activity by the subject that gave the officer a reason to intervene. This court believes that he just had it in for the guy and saw the opportunity to strike.

The officer was within the twenty-one foot distance when the subject failed to comply. Was the shooting justified? Who can make that call? I trust the officer until evidence proves otherwise. As a former police officer can you comprehend or do you know what may have been going through this officer’s mind? The court of public opinion believes it was murder.

Preliminary findings by the police department are that it was not justified. OK. I accept that for what it is.

Reading the comments concerning this incident on this thread and in the Seattle news outlets and blogs make me believe that a fair and unbiased trial is not possible for this officer in Seattle or on Free Republic.

Hopefully that is not the case and cooler heads will prevail.

The officer said that the Indian was armed and made a threatening move with the knife after being repeatedly told by the officer to drop the knife.

Cite where Officer Ian Birk claimed Williams made a threatening move with the knife.

A man whittling an object is not reason enough for me to go after him. I would approach carefully and question from a distance. I understand this man had a hearing problem but until he made a move toward me I would have held off and at least called for backup while surveying the situation. I sure hope there is a plausible explanation and he gets a fair trial.

The officer said that the Indian was armed and made a threatening move with the knife ...

Link please.

He was a convicted sexual predator...

Link please. And tell us how that excuses shooting him down or how that is due process.

Are you refusing to answer these questions because you just made that stuff up? Nothing mature about that.

If a cooler head had prevailed, Mr. Williams would still be alive, and the Officer Birk would not be facing the loss of his career, and hopefully, in the name of justice, his freedom.

If you continue to make charges against the victim, you ought to at least provide your source(es), as you appear to have found some that are inaccessible to others...or are just making stuff up.
