Politics and Eye Movement: Liberals Focus Their Attention on 'Gaze Cues' Much Differently...

ScienceDaily (Dec. 9, 2010) — It goes without saying that conservatives and liberals don't see the world in the same way. Now, research from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln suggests that is exactly, and quite literally, the case.

In a new study, UNL researchers measured both liberals' and conservatives' reaction to "gaze cues" -- a person's tendency to shift attention in a direction consistent with another person's eye movements, even if it's irrelevant to their current task -- and found big differences between the two groups.

Liberals responded strongly to the prompts, consistently moving their attention in the direction suggested to them by a face on a computer screen. Conservatives, on the other hand, did not.

Why? Researchers suggested that conservatives' value on personal autonomy might make them less likely to be influenced by others, and therefore less responsive to the visual prompts...

Full title: Politics and Eye Movement: Liberals Focus Their Attention on 'Gaze Cues' Much Differently Than Conservatives Do.

This study actually makes a certain amount of sense. People with liberal beliefs will follow the gaze of an image on a computer screen. Appearently they believe the direction of the image gaze is important and they will also gaze in that direction. Conservatives however do not follow the gaze on the computer image. It's only an image, right?

Interesting.

Leftists are trained to obey big brother. They can’t live without his face.

My general experience is that liberals are easily distracted by shiny, moving objects, witness the election of Barack Obama as President.

Yup. He cast his lure into the political waters and they swallowed it whole - hook, line, and sinker.

This is like the whole homo argument — people are wired that way. But they aren’t. How many people do you know who used to be liberal and are now conservative? It was a change of perspective and a deeper appreciation of how society works that moved most people’s ideology, not some innate change.

It’s an interesting study but I think it has to do more with secondary parallels in people’s personalities.

The left is easily distracted and can’t concentrate on the task at hand. It also shows a tendency to “follow the crowd” and not think for themselves.

How many people do you know who used to be liberal and are now conservative?

Lots.

Part of it is maturity - seeing how the world really works. Another part of it is self realization and accepting ones own abilities and worth. Once an individual realizes he will likely do well in a merit based system, if he works hard, he will likely start moving toward a conservatism ideology.

But people who feel defeated and have low self esteem will likely stay liberal. They are more dependent on the community and they look to society for the answers to life's problems. So instead of trying to figure out how to be successful they spend their time looking for cues about what the community is about to do next - the herd mentality.
