OK, first, let me say I have a Facebook acct. And I use my real name on FB.
I just Googled something to find out more about some sales at a local hardware store. One of the first sites was some outfit called "Yelp"
I opened the page, and very prominently, at the top, it said something like "Hi djf - let us personalize your experience" and it showed my FB picture.
I've also been seeing more and more sites that have a little blip towards the bottom saying "be the first of your friends to like this", then more BS redirections to Twitter, etc.
Now I DO NOT WANT some random website I visit to know all about me! I DO NOT WANT the FB people to have access to my browsing history or where/what I do on the net.
I'm using Firefox, does this mean I have to turn off all cookies for all sites?
Thoughts? Opinions? Solutions?
bookmark this is gonna be fun
So glad I’ve never used Facebook. Too bad that my wife does....
My first thought is to get off of Faceplant. That might help.
flash cookies, set your flash player settings here: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager.html
2 mistakes right out of the gate.
The only way to keep your life even reasonably private is to have the smallest Interwebz footprint possible (unless you are celebrity and I recommend they use a non-de-plume).
There are 4 people in the entire world who can trace my RL persona to my Interwebz FD2003 one. And if I can't trust them, I may as well give up completely.
Yeah, I have a phony FB ID (NOT FD2003 but another non-de-plume), but I just use it to visit sites when my foolish friends post up their RL info.
The founder of Facebook was very explicit in not believing in privacy.
Look into the firefox extension NoScript. Also you may want to delete all cookies. Ones you use, like for here at FR will have to be re-authorized to the whitelist.
I use my real name too but then again, I don’t have anything to keep secret. heh
You need to go into your Facebook settings and block the Instant Personalization. That is how you block Yelp, Pandora and Docs.com.
Thanks.
The FB settings are one of the biggest PITA’s that I’ve ever seen. Notoriously hard to find out what does what exactly.
And of course they don’t go out of their way to TELL YOU...
Why do you allow her to do that?
Yeah, you need to check your account settings and your privacy settings every once in a while to make sure Facebook hasn’t changed or added something there since the LAST time you double checked them! :~/
I don’t use FB.
My dear FRiend, if you are using Facebook with your real name and regular email address, you have abandoned any possibility of privacy. The whole world now knows the results of your last proctologist appointment.
Oops. Sorry, I clicked on your post by accident. I meant that to reply to post 11. :~)
We don't typically consult one another regarding which websites we choose to visit. If she told me to to go on FR, I'd tell her to go piss up a rope. If I told her not to go on a particular site, I would expect(and deserve) the same response....
Meant to say NOT go on FR... (mangled sentence lol)
"Ghostery allows you to block scripts from companies that you don't trust, delete local shared objects, and even block images and iframes. Ghostery puts your web privacy back in your hands."
I have TACO , ADD BLOCK PLUS, BETTER PRIVACY, and GHOSTERY (these are all free addons for FIREFOX).
(they may seem redundant, but they are doing a great job for me)
They block this stuff and allow you an easy click on/off interface to enable/disable any cookies you want.
PLUS , it always SHOWS you what cookies are tracking you.
Start simple. Get BETTER PRIVACY and it will probably solve that little problem for you.
