Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee refers to the opponents of Boise State and TCU as the "Little Sisters of the Poor".
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Even if TCU and Boise State run the table, they still don't deserve to be in the Bowl Championship Series title game, Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee said Wednesday.
In an interview with The Associated Press, the president at the university with the largest athletic program in the country said that TCU and Boise State do not face a difficult enough schedule to play in the national championship game.
"Well, I don't know enough about the X's and O's of college football," said Gee, formerly the president at West Virginia, Colorado, Brown and Vanderbilt universities. "I do know, having been both a Southeastern Conference president and a Big Ten president, that it's like murderer's row every week for these schools. We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day.
"So I think until a university runs through that gantlet that there's some reason to believe that they not be the best teams to [be] in the big ballgame."
Boise State president Bob Kustra, in an interview with the Idaho Statesman, returned fire.
"The BCS has finally found someone to stand up and defend the indefensible and Gordon Gee proved it -- he not just proved that it's indefensible but he did so with facts that are simply wrong," Kustra told the newspaper.
Boise State has beaten one team in the current top 25 of the BCS standings, beating No. 16 Virginia Tech. Ohio State has played two top-25 BCS teams -- losing to No. 7 Wisconsin but beating No. 24 Iowa. TCU has beaten No. 20 Utah.

FYI, Boise State has an NFL QB, two NFL wide receivers, and at least one NFL offensive lineman. On defense, they have several future NFL players in the front seven.
At Auburn, they can’t stop anyone. Barely won 3-4 games and a pass defense that would get killed by Boise State. That defense that is supposedly plyed in the SEC this year is more bad offense than anything else.
I live in OH and I hope, if either gets a chance to play OSU, they kick the Buckeyes’ @ss.
Oregon fans are praying that if the Ducks make it to the NC game, Auburn is the opponent, not TCU or BSU. Both schools may have the speed and discipline to defeat the blur offense.
Boise St and to a lesser extent TCU don't have to play tough teams weak in and weak out. The WAC is on par with the MAC. The Mountain West is a little better, but still not even as strong as the Big East, let alone the Big 10, PAC 10, or SEC.
It's one thing to play three decent teams a year, spread apart by a few weeks. It's another to play good teams week in and out, and decent teams in between those teams that can beat you on an off night. It's not only who you play, but when you play them. Nevada, Oregon State, and Va Tech spread out is one thing. Wisconsin, at Michigan, Illinois, at Northwestern, at Iowa for five weeks back to back to back is a whole other matter. All of those teams are capable of winning on a given day and are bowl eligible. Boise St is Michigan with a better defense.
I'd put Boise and TCU ahead of the two loss teams, but I'd take a one loss Big 10, SEC, or PAC 10 team ahead of either of them. Beating up on New Mexico teams week in and out do not impress me. Boise has one good win (VA Tech) and two decent wins (Oregon State, a .500 PAC 10 team and Hawaii). TCU beat Utah, BYU, and Baylor, and some slightly tougher teams than the WAC which flat out sucks outside of Boise, Fresno (down this year), and Hawaii.
IMO, Iowa, a 7-4 Big 10 team would beat both Boise and TCU. I'd put both teams behind not only Auburn/Oregon, but Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State, LSU, Oklahoma State, and Stanford.
Personally, I'd like to see a playoff. 11 Conference champions with weaker conferences getting a play-in game, and the top 16 of the rest. If Boise/TCU is that good, let them have to deal with tough games week to week.
Gordon Gee...another whiny elitist jackass...
Can Ohio do that week in and week out? It’s not as though their schedule is that hard either. They get a pass because of their “Name” and history. But I wouldn’t say Ohio’s conference or the Big East is anything special yet for some reason they feel superior to Boise’s conference because of the history and nothing else. If teams from those conferences can get automatoc bids to the NC with an undefeated season then I see no reason Boise shouldn’t. I’m tired of watching Ohio be embarrassed in NC’s.
Just last year Texas was scheduling some ridiculously easy teams one after the other and people were ahhing...over their lopsided wins and considered them contenders.
You could make a case in the SEC it’s grueling every week and their 1 loss teams should receive more respect but I’d say it’s a down year even in the SEC this year. None of the traditional powers seem especially dominant this year so if ever a mid major was going to make the big game this would be it.
Big 10 “Murderers Row”? The Big 10 is just a shadow of its’ former self. It has been a namby pamby conference for 10 years and to put it in the same class as the SEC is ludicrous.
So, he will schedule TCU and Boise St. home and home?
As far as I know, Michigan State is the only Big Ten team to schedule a series with Boise State. As a Sparty, I can’t wait! I’ve loved BSU since they beat Oklahoma.
This is another thing people refuse to acknowledge - large programs can’t AFFORD to schedule these teams home and home. The economics don’t work. Their stadiums are too small.
Did you see the Boise/Idaho game? 16,000 people in a freaking barn! There are probably larger indoor practice facilities in the Big Ten and SEC. Boise’s own stadium only holds 34,000.
I realize they’re good, but I’m sorry, thats not big boy football.
The BCS was set up to be an exclusive club of selected conferences. In that respect the “National Championship” game is aleays suspect. I would love to see Boise State in a real championship game. Win or lose, BSU will make the game exciting to watch and not be the typical blowout that passes for a BCS setup farce.
No way would Ohio State schedule a home and home with BSU or TCU. They wouldn’t take a chance on being beaten by a school they consider inferior. In that sense, I applaud Virginia Tech for playing BSU this year. OSU lacks the guts to put a “national championship” opportunity on the line.
VoTech played Boise on a “neutral field” (FedEx Field in D.C.)
OSU would have no problem scheduling Boise under similar circumstances, but home and homes when one school houses 30,000 won’t pay the bills.
OSU has scheduled Miami (FL), Southern Cal, and Texas out of conference the past few years. I don’t think they deserve to be called out for “not playing anyone”.
If they do that then Gordon Gee can make that claim and spout off about playing the finest schools.
I was at the Iowa-Ohio State game last weekend. OSU is good, but Iowa led most of that game and lost it on one long ball pass with their third string linebackers in the game due to injury. Had Iowa been healthy they would have beat their ass, and the Iowa offense was mediocre at best that day.
I will laugh if there’s a OSU and either a TCU or BSU matchup in the bowl and OSU gets wiped.
I completely agree. If TCU and Boise State get their assess handed to them then this issue should be settled, but should they win would that give more fuel to those in favor of a play-off system?
Agreed,
design a playoff using the current bowl system and seriously reduce the amount of bowls, I mean do we really need 32 bowl games?I see 16 teams playing in 8 New Year bowl games, 8 in 4 games the following week 4in 2 games then the national championship which would mean the final two schools would play 16 games total if you factor in a conference championship game.I’m just tossing this idea around if someone wants to take a crack at how to do it I’m open to their ideas.I’m just tired of the computers using lame formulas making the decisions.
And put the National Championship game BACK on New Years Day along with the Rose Parade as god intended. (Had to throw that in)
