Maybe a couple of years ago, I gave up on ever expecting any quality product from the big 3 pizza stores. Without exaggeration, I could get a much, much better product by simply picking up a frozen Tombstone pizza and baking it. (Pizza Inn is great though. They don't deliver here, but I gladly go and pick it up rather than order the crap the big 3 serves.)
On to burgers. I used to love McDonalds and Burger King hamburgers. However, for some time, when I would eat them, they just didn't taste right. Especially McDonalds -- It's like I was eating a meat substitute or something. I thought maybe I just didn't like hamburgers anymore.
It has been a long, long time since I cooked any hamburgers at home. But just on a whim, I tried it last night. Didn't do anything special. Just took some ground beef, sprinkled in some salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and fried it up on the stove.
Ate a hamburger using 2 pieces of bread with mustard. It was the best hamburger I've had in years! Crunchy outer texture of the fried burger with a juicy interior; I know I'll never eat that crap again at the national joints -- just like with the pizza.
About once a month I jones for some McDonald’s. My stomach complains shortly thereafter. I’ve switched to Hardees for my fix - better taste and all that. BUT - the writer is right, home-cooked burgers are best. I think Bill Cosby had a few words on this a while back.
General Tso’s chicken
You want a good burger????? Listen, I don’t give this secret to just anyone, but since I can see you’re patience is fading,....1600 PA Ave. There’s this black guy there, Barry, just ask for the Waygu beef burger. Sure it’ll cost you about a $100 bucks, but you’re paying for it anyway, so enjoy! There’s a party every night at Barry’s crib! Stop by!
Exception
McD and BK burgers don’t taste right and you can indeed get a much better burger home cooked.
Even the new premium burger tastes odd.
Rather go In and Out or Mojo’s.
A friend of mine discovered something most of us may have overlooked. At Carl’s Jr. on a lot of burgers, your hamburger is not 100% meat- you can pay more for that. The Big Carl for example, isn’t 100% beef but the Six Dollar burger is.
I’m still addicted to In-N-Out Double Double with cheese but there are non in the midwest. :-( Some pizzas I like but buying from the grocery store as you did, then topping with your favorites makes the BEST pizza ever.
Not in Raleigh NC. They are too dry from overcooking that you have to smother them with some type of sauce, ketchup, mustard whatever just to get them down.
Or Fuddruckers. 5 Guys is just down the street in a converted service station. They kept some of the feel of the old station.
Just had one here in San Jose at their new store.
Pretty good.
RE: Pizzas—have you tried Domino’s lately? They were my least favorite by far, but they went back to the drawing board, so to speak, and their pizza is now amazing. Far superior to Papa John’s even (there’s something I never thought I’d say).
Agree generally. I must say that these days I’ll eat at Five Guys. When I was in CA, In-N-Out was still good (and they are a Christian company).
But the substandard ingredients and very questionable hygiene has now made returning to home preparation more of a reality for us now. Products from China also are very unhealthy i general (I have first hand knowledge of this). Melamine in powdered milk, dog food was not accidental — they will do WHATEVER to lower costs — they don’t care that some human or dog half a world away may have adverse health effects. But due to price, most restaurants use lots of primary ingredients from China.
Oyyyy! Mate! Does ya like a litter 'Roo in yer buhrger?
Unbelievably great burgers.
And since I’ve lost 30 lbs and need to continue, I’ll probably never have one again.
Love the 5 guys!!!!

I don’t know how to post pictures. But if I did, I would post a pic of David Hasselhoff(taken by his daughter) stuffing a burger in his mouth, whilst seriously inebriated and flailing around on the floor.
Kind of like having to look at a closeup of Helen Thomas whenever one of your Freepers decides it’s time for us to lose our appetites.
But yur making me hungry, bbd..and it’s only 9:15 am.(post word Vanity after your heading next time?)
Micky D’s is good for the following, according to my daughter;
You are driving to your fifth call of the day, you are a nurse who visits teen mothers in their homes to “counsel” them about their impending baby birth.
You are starving and running short on time.
Voila! McD’s looms ahead.
Fries are hot, drink is cold, burger is..well, you know the rest.
Just sayin’
# 1 lb good quality lean ground meat
# 1 tablespoon olive oil
# 2 garlic cloves
# 1/4 teaspoon salt
# 2 -3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
# 1 tablespoon horseradish (optional but good)
# 1 raw egg
Mix together and grill/fry.
Tried 5 Guys, it was OK, but the burger I had last week at a Wendy’s was a bit better. Enjoyed Fuddrucker’s in the past because you could add a bunch of fixins’, etc. Most chains
do have the assembly line approach, get it to you fast (OR leave burgers lying around for awhile and then they grab one etc.)
Other places —NON-CHAIN— may charge more for a burger and you get better quality; recently I was up in Concord NH and went to a bar and grille called Cheers Downtown (no relation to the TV series) and had a pretty good burger, but again not as cheaply priced as fast food (salad was good too). Bonus here:
unlike fast food places, you could treat yourself to
an adult alcoholic beverage... But again, not a chain.
