As noted in Celebritology this morning, Randy Quaid and his wife Evi are in trouble with the law again. The couple currently faces burglary charges for allegedly living in a guest house on a property in Montecito, Calif. The actor and his wife say they have owned the property since the 1990s, but documents indicate that it is currently owned by someone else, who bought the house from the person who bought it from the Quaids. In other words, Cousin Eddie and his spouse sold the place a long time ago, but seem to have forgotten.
This is hardly the first example of sadly strange behavior from the brother and sister-in-law of Dennis Quaid. Need a memory refresher on what preceded this event? Here's a timeline, which includes information about a recently filed lawsuit that could explain why the Quaids believe that guest house is rightfully theirs.
July, 1983: Quaid stars as the clueless, money-troubled Cousin Eddie in "National Lampoon's Vacation," a role he would reprise a few years later in "Christmas Vacation." Despite the obvious parallels, this was just an acting gig. Quaid's real life wouldn't start to vaguely mirror Eddie's for another two decades.

Randy has played some kick-ass characters over the years. Very talented and eccentric actor. I especially liked him in “Kingpin.”
In The Last Picture Show he pulls off the smallest of parts with the most memorable performance ,,,,Its a great movie.
One thing I have always thought about is how can he be so goofy looking and have a brother who is the handsome leading man?
From what I’ve read, Meg Ryan wasn’t such a prize.
Superior attitude, hand to get along with..doesn’t even speak to her own mother. Career’s gone downhill.

The story of that one incident and the aftermath is probably five times as long as the entire history of the Quaids told at the link.
They were arrested in September 2009 after giving a false address, false phone number, and an invalid credit card to run up a $10,000 stay at a resort in California - after leaving another resort where they did the same thing to the tune of $17,000 (they had a home in Texas). Police said there was a pattern of defrauding resorts.
When arrested, Evi was charged with physically assaulting the arresting officer. The Quaids may not have had the money to pay for their resort stay, but they simply had the officers drive them by an ATM to get the money for bail (yeah, I have no idea what the daily withdrawal limit is on a California ATM either).
Then they sent a check for 50% of what they owed (claiming that paid the entire bill), with a bizarre handwritten letter copied to the media in which strange claims were made. Evi followed this up by driving a semi to police headquarters, where she parked it and posted a huge sign on the side accusing the arresting officer of taking bribes.
They failed to show for their first FIVE court dates, were arrested and extradited from Texas, then Randy called his 1988 'LBJ' Golden Globe as a witness at the hearing.Another hearing was set. Bail was raised to $40,000. They were arrested again after showing up two weeks late for the next hearing. Bail had now gone from $20K to $100K.
They paid the rest of their bill (the first resort with the $17,000 unpaid bill apparently never pressed charges, and it's unknown whether the other allegedly defrauded hotels and resorts pressed charges or were paid) and remaining charges were dropped against Randy (the celebrity treatment?), but Evi was sentenced to 240 hours of community service for assaulting the policeman and the whole sign prank.
Randy also claims Braun forged hims name to make $10,000,000 in real estate loans when the market was good. Unfortunately, the market is no longer good and the property security those loans is not worth $10,000,000. Quaid's lost money on those loans and is in trouble with the IRS regarding those loans and other affairs.
At the time of the 2009 and earlier incidents, however, the Quaids had a home in Texas and allegedly enjoyed the highlife of going to resorts, giving false phone numbers and addresses and credit cards that they knew wouldn't cover the stay . . . then skipping out.
That story, by the way, is about 15% of the entire story regarding the whole resort experience.
A shame. I always found him likable on screen and thought he was an underrated dramatic actor. And when he acted nuts, he simply fit in with the rest of Hollywood.
Sounds like his role in “Independence Day” may have been culled from personal experience! Gotta be either drugs or alien abduction, take your pick.
