Body Parts Found in Shark Tentatively Identified (Disappeared From Near 'Jaws Beach')

Bahamian authorities believe they have identified the body parts that were found in the belly of a tiger shark. Assistant police commissioner Hulan Hanna said the body appears to be that of Judson Newton, who disappeared off Jaws Beach in the Bahamas.

The beach got its name after one of the "Jaws" movies was filmed there. Authorities are still waiting on DNA results to positively identify the parts belong to Newton.

The shark was caught on September 4 by three friends out fishing at sea. Investment banker Humphrey Simmons said his friend shot the shark and it regurgitated something.

"Out popped a leg from the knee down and and you know I was hysterical I ran," said Simmons. "All of us basically were stunned at that moment and after catching my composure I came back, and I gaffed the leg and put it in a bucket that we had on board and told the guys that the fishing trip was off."

Newton was on a boating trip with friends off Jaws Beach on New Providence Island on August 29 when his boat encountered engine trouble. Rescuers found three men aboard the boat, but they said Newton and a friend jumped into the water to try to swim back to shore. No one ever saw Newton or the friend again.

Bahamian officials said they are unsure if Newton was alive when he was eaten.

So many things wrong with that sentence.

Often it isn't even a matter of being a strong swimmer or not. The water is a really good conductor of heat, and it will suck that heat out of you until you are the same temperature as the ocean (i.e. dead).

And even if you are a great swimmer, and don't get hypothermia, what about the buddy swimming beside you? Drowning people are not the most rational sort, and they WILL drag you down with them.

Nope. They successfully jumped the shark.

That would be the end of my fishing trip too. Probably the end of my swimming as well.

I spent a lot of time on long distance boats in my youth, small boats 48-80 feet. I never got a yen to get in the water, though.

Sounds like Newton wasn't a sharp cookie.
