Actor Ed Norton named UN biodiversity ambassador UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - American actor Edward Norton, who has starred in films including "The Incredible Hulk," "Fight Club," and "Kingdom of Heaven," has a new role -- United Nations goodwill ambassador for biodiversity.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made the announcement, noting that Norton and his family had long been involved in issues related to sustainable development and conservation.
Norton said he hoped he can use his celebrity to boost awareness of the UN's ideals and activities in environmental conservation.
"I think that (goodwill) ambassadors in many ways can play a role in highlighting the models of success that the UN is promoting around the world," he said in accepting the appointment.
Norton has been active in environmental causes, including running the New York marathon to raise funds for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, and has been part of the Crowdrise social network for charitable causes.
The United Nations has designated 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, with heads of State set to discuss the issue at the General Assembly in September.
Norton said a key challenge of his new role will be making people more aware that human well-being is fundamentally intertwined with biological diversity.

Is this from The Onion?
It was the rhino suit that put him over the top.
First Rule of the UN on FR...
Here, Norton is clearly representing the amoebas of the biodiversity world. A fitting choice, in my estimation.
“To the Ban Ki-Moon, Norton!”
Gee, I first noticed him in “American History X”.
More unicorns!
Maybe he can raise awareness of the need to raise awareness. That and more unicorns.
Has the UN got an ambassador to the Real World yet?
I was looking for a way to make a bigger ass of myself than I already was, and they presented me with this wonderful opportunity.
Another a**kicker and tough guy for Marxism.
One supporter stated, purportedly he got to boink Salma Hayek. That means he is qualified for most any U.N. job.
Does that mean he is for UN’s Agenda 21, to take away private property for supposed sustainability projects where humans are said to directly affect the environment.
Hi, I'm Ed Norton, subterranean biodiversity engineer. I sample all the fecal matter that flows through the system to ensure that all species of bacteria are fairly represented.
Well, he is a member in good standing of the Loyal Order of Raccoons.
I’ll obey the first rule of posting on FR to Weird Tolkienish Figure
