Pershing was a six star so he would have the same rank as Marshal Foch. Washington was awarded a sixth star posthumously in the 1980’s.

Awarding Petreus a sixth star strikes me as the kind of jimcrack thingy that Obama would do. Too many things wrong with the idea to start to mention.

According to the Army, the only ones actually to wear five stars were the WWII generals. However, Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, and Pershing arguably held the same rank, but wore only four stars.

In 1976, President Ford posthumously appointed George Washington General of the Armies of the United States and specified that he would rank first among all officers of the Army, past and present. Presumably, therefore, Washington would need six stars.
