ANNAPOLIS, Md. As they have for 70 years, students at the U.S. Naval Academy celebrated the end of their grueling first year by scaling a 21-foot obelisk on Monday. But this time, without a lard coating on the monument, students completed the task in minutes.

Oh, I agree. It’s a PC cover for a old tradition.....................
This is all based on that nutso philosophy that we must avoid ANYTHING uncomfortable or risky. This is why many children are not growing up to become *mature* adults any more.
Common sense....no longer common.
Have a another cup of coffee and enjoy your morning
navy = sally’s dance academy
“Kind of sad for the middies who may be the only class in years that will be denied this rite of passage.”
My husband, who is a Naval Academy graduate, agrees with you.
I’m enjoying it, trust me.
PFFFTTTTT..........GO NAVY BEAT ARMY :-)
That’s good. Nothing like caffeine to make the day go smoother
I drink coffee for YOUR protection.
I drink coffee so that I can do stupid things faster.
Good-then we should get along just fine.
Perhaps the middies exhausted the grease supply while training the goat?
Maybe they exhausted their supply while frying Army’s ass in the Army Navy game since 2002...
Can’t fault Army for focusing on battles more important than ball games since 2002...
Touche..
If they think this is uncomfortable and risky, wait until they have Iranian planes flying over their carrier with nukes on board. THAT might make one feel antsy.
Traditions are important.
When I went to Alden Partridge’s school in the Green Mountains they had done away with several traditions that my Grandfather and Uncle experienced.
They’ve re-instituted several of them. When I talk to recent grads and they tell me of the traditions, its as if they went to a different school. And in some ways, I feel as if I missed out.
And it shows in the annual donations to the school. The four or five years around my class years generally are at the lower end of the list.
But then again, they dont have secret societies anymore and they don’t burn cars on the UP after the switch to summer uniforms in April. So we have that going for us.
Good thing none of these guys got hurt climbing the obelisk. Soooooo what happens to those that went Marine option and they find themselves in combat? I mean if the traditions are too dangerous...... what does that make combat?
= Enraged muslims
It is an irony par excellence
that
prohibting plebes greasing their shaft during their rite of passage
is actually
indicative of a homosexulaist military.
Wonder if this was rahmmed through by 0bama’s be-tighted chief of staff?
What will happen is that the learning curve will be steeper. When they find themselves in combat, there will be a winnowing period when the ones who can’t hack it leave, feet first. The hazing and traditions helped to winnow them out before combat and without the cost of a casket.
