At last, a laughing hippopotamus mobile ringtone

Or, if you're more technologically minded, you could always go for the nostalgia-inducing sounds of a 56k modem trying to connect.

The ringtones are available as part of the BBC World Service's Save Our Sounds project - an effort to get people to record and send in 'endangered sounds' so they can be preserved for posterity. We've previously written about the project here (and also mentioned that it's one of nine BBC nominations for the Webby Awards.) The sound of the laughing hippo - which was recorded in the Serengeti - can best be described as a combination of the Count from Sesame Street and a very large motorbike revving up.

Other ringtones available include a cable car bell from San Francisco, some screeching kookaburras from Australia, and the 'wolf whistle bird' from Ecuador.

I'm at a loss to explain how we've managed to get along this long without it.

Here's the link to the ringtones. The Kukkoburro ringtone is cool, too. The hippo does sound like he's laughing.

>>I have Rush’s theme music as my ringtone. ...I love it.<<

“My City was Gone” by the Pretenders. It drove Chrissie Hynde NUTS that Rush grabbed it for his theme and bump music (later she changed her mind):

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_City_Was_Gone

>>According to Rolling Stone, Hynde took action after Limbaugh told a pair of reporters in 1997 that “it was icing on the cake that it was [written by] an environmentalist, animal rights wacko and was an anti-conservative song. It is anti-development, anti-capitalist, and here I am going to take a liberal song and make fun of [liberals] at the same time.” This led Hynde to demand that Limbaugh stop using the song, which he did. However, Hynde did an about face and offered Limbaugh the use of her song in exchange for his donating the appropriate royalties to PETA. She later wrote to the organization saying, “In light of Rush Limbaugh’s vocal support of PETA’s campaign against the Environmental Protection Agency’s foolish plan to test some 3,000 chemicals on animals, I have decided to allow him to keep my song, ‘My City Was Gone,’ as his signature tune...<<

BTW, my ringtone is “Fox On the Run” by The Sweet.

It is quite the conversation piece.

FINALLY! I was getting sort of down about it, too.

Fellas, may I suggest one thing? If you use this one to indicate your wife is calling, you better have a real good cover story ready. That goes for the Star Wars Imperial March, too. Just a friendly reminder from the Drill Marriage Counseling Agency.

AT&T didn’t offer it, I had to go to a 3rd party to get it.

BTW, my ringtone is “Fox On the Run” by The Sweet.

I have a phone (LG VX8300) which is very easily hacked into.
I can use Goldwave to select a specific part of any song I like, concvert it to a usable file and add it to the phone as a ringtone. Everyone of my contacts has a separate ringtone so I know who is calling as soon as I hear the tone. A simple old fashioned phone ringing bell is set for anyone not on my contact list.

My wife's ring tone is the opening to "Let Me Love You" by Stevie Ray Vaughan.
My Mother-in-law's ringtone is the opening of "The Bitch is Back" by Elton John.
My Daughter's ringtone is the opening of "You Spin Me Right Round" by Dead or Alive.
My Father-in-law's (retired cop) ringtone is "Bad Boys" from the COPS TV show.

And so on and so on...I have great fun thinking up unusual ringtones and loading them on my phone.
