As enticing as his talent is I think he’s the next PacMan Jones or Ricky Williams. The Browns could do better with a second round pick.
Are you saying that Joey Porter getting shot in the butt while in a nightclub in which some guy was shooting at someone else and he was caught in the crossfire was his fault? Sorry, I don’t think so. I would say that the incident shows he has poor judgement. I’ve been in a lot of bars in my time and some that were pretty seedy, but the only time I’ve ever been shot at was in combat and not a bar. A bar where things are settled with guns and not fists is pretty unusual and is a bar that should be avoided...
Somehow I feel you think I was being vague. Please review my Hemingwayesque earlier post. YES it was his fault. He later drove drunk, resisted arrest, and assaulted an oficer. He was an embarrasment to the Steelers. That's why they dumped him. They were right too.
I am a stellers fan, but I was disgusted when one of the great tradions of NFL football, the Browns, were sold to Baltimore, almost as much as I was disgusted with Baltimore for taking them. Remember, Baltimore lost its Colts because of a sh*tb*ll owner who really didn’t care about the city or football.
That said, I hope all Brownies get hoof and mouth ;-).
He broke rules. Started fights. He wasn’t Rooney material.
No sooner was this announced then the league suspended Holmes for four games for a violation of the drug policy. I think Pittsburgh dumped him while the dumping was good.
I am a long-time Stillers fan too and I was very unhappy with what the league did with the Colts and the Browns. But, then they made up for it by giving us a team in Baltimore that we could hate almost as much as if not more than the old-time Raiders (before Al Davis was able to hide his own Easter eggs).
Wow, hadn’t heard that one. They really should fine/suspend that idiot Roethlisberger for a couple of games. Just ‘cause.
But in broader terms the range of options they have in the draft this year is amazing. Certainly nothing like any they've had since '99.
Some people around here may complain as much as they like about Mangini being an "idiot", and he certainly should never have been given all the power he had last year, but cutting as much dead weight as he did, adding what seem to be some good players via trade and FA, and ending up with a dozen draft picks to play with ain't bad. And half or more of those moves were made before Czar Holmgren came aboard.
Based on sheer history and the ever present "curse" there's always the sneaking suspicion that they'll screw it up, but it should be an interesting ride.
I was dissapointed Holmgren ended up there. He adds an element of “crybaby” that I’ve never seen in the Browns.
I would just compare him (experienced football guy with successful track record - not sure where the "crybaby" comes from) to previous Browns management. Since Paul Brown was fired in 1963 that's Art Modell and NO ONE ELSE with anything like a successful track record (I don't think a lawyer like Carmen Policy who destroyed the 49'ers before he left to "manage" the Browns counts). And the same with Mangini. He's the only coach hired in Browns history (including Paul Brown) who had previously coached an NFL team.
With both the franchise is in uncharted territory. That may turn our well or badly, but at least it's different.
PS: I apologise to all that this got turned into a Cleveland Browns dialog and assure you that this is my last comment. We have been the one eyed, car hit, three legged dog of the NFL for so long that it must seem bizarre to anyone who’s not a fan of the team that we even care anymore.
Oh, he’s a good football guy no doubt. The crybaby part comes from his complaining after Super Bowl XL after getting outcoached by Bill Cowher of all people.
