AUGUSTA, Ga. Okay, so I have two friends who do not like Phil Mickelson. Actually, I know quite a few people who do not like Phil Mickelson. But there are two in particular I'm thinking about today after Mickelson put on one of the greatest shows ever on a Masters Saturday. Back-to-back eagles! Almost a third eagle! A brilliant 67! A slot in the final pairing on Sunday!
Yes, I know two people who are not happy.
One of those people is a colleague who knows Mickelson a little bit (but only a little bit) and the other is a friend who doesn't know Mickelson at all. He just knows what he sees on television and reads in various places. The colleague and friend don't know each other and they're nothing like each other, but the funny thing is they dislike Mickelson for the same reason: both think he's a phony.
The "phony" charge in sports, in politics, in life has long interested me probably because, nine out of 10 times, it doesn't make much sense. This guy's a phony. That woman's a phony. I don't like that jerk, something phony about him. A reporter friend likes to tell the story about people he knows who, through the years, have insisted that Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden was a big, fat phony. "It's all an act with him," they would say. To which the reporter would reply: "Well, he's been doing it for 50 years so it's one hell of an act."

Wow, if they don’t like Phil, they must really hate Tiger! Comparing the two, Phil is so far ahead that I can’t imagine anyone still pulling for Woods. I now call him Scumbag Woods - a fitting title.
Me, I,m pulling for Mickelson. He is a nice gentleman and a great example for golf...
Not only doesn’t fit but is an embarrassment to be throwing it around. Phil is so much better a person than most that I really just don’t get it. Maybe it’s just that fact that he is challenging to top players - who knows. He seems to be a good family man and concerned about his wife and family.
Just what is this author and others seeing that is so different?
If you’re not a golfer, you just don’t know how true that is!
Yes, seems that those that have no idea about golf seem to have the lowest opinion of him. Not sure why that is so, but do understand jealousy - maybe that is the reason... He is not only good at his profession, but a good family man and good father - what else do you guys expect!
That is exactly it. Anyone who seems too squeaky clean, too nice, with too perfect a family life or too white a smile or too perfect of hair seems to often be labeled as "phony" as they seem too good to be true. Yet, a lot of it comes down to sheer envy.
Yes.., pure slander! They seem to put out all sorts of garbage on those that succeed. He is as much of a real family man as anyone known. Forget all those tabloids.
Shows a lack of understanding of golf...
PHIL WINS!!!! WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!
A bogey free round full of shot making of the highest order. When his wayward tee balls almost betrayed him, Phil’s short game AGAIN came through bigtime!! That the whole family was there in person only makes it more special...
Lee’s time for a major is coming, this year across the pond.....His game is rock solid. So is KJ’s.
Tiger, OTOH, better stop it with the antics. I understand you haven’t played in 5 months but accept the fact you’re going to hit some bad shots, just like every professional does. But you don’t see them acting the way you do....GROW THE HELL UP, and quick!!
The golfing gods are smiling ear to ear tonight thanks the Phil!!
You betcha! Am I happy - well, let me tell you...heh... It could not happen to a better golfer and good person!
I’ll have to wait to get home to see the green jacket presentation on 18 green on Golf Channel. I’m guessing Phil will get pretty emotional then...
The last 2 days were really, really good.....
They'd never met - Mickelson just read some stuff about him and quietly took care of it.
He seems like he's really one of the good guys.....I'm sure I'll read some different opinions as I go downthread.
Gotta admit I loved it when Woods did it twice - on the same hole - today.....took his arse right out of contention in fifteen seconds.
Tour golfers don’t “hang” together like a sports team.....they do their own private jet/accomodations thing. I tend to doubt your thinking.
15 years ago, I can tell you from personal experience: Phil Mickelson was a first rate asshole. He acted all nice in his public persona... but, to photographers, or fans milling around after a tourney.. he was RUDE as hell. And, yes.. he was horn-dogging after ever skirt that looked his way.
It seems, now... according to old friends of mine who still follow him around, he really has changed.
So... today, I’m VERY happy for him. That shot on 13 was one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Thanks....I usually don’t click the link and do the full article thingie, but I’ll check this one out.

Yes! -- "The Six (iron) From The Sticks".
;-)
Yep ...between the trees and just over the creek...that was awesome...
Not being a golfer, I get a kick out of how Phil doesn't come close to fitting the mold. He's obviously nowhere near being an athlete (look at his 'hangies' and his droopy pants), but he's sure got this Skilled Leisure Activity nailed. Good for him.
Is this the one he bombed from the pine needles over the water within a few feet of the hole? I was watching it on the web and almost fell of my chair.
Another one on the back nine Phil hit an 8 iron 205 yards it was also a great shot. The guy is strong. Supposedly he does power lifting.
