Pi related anecdotes welcome. Remember, Indiana never officially adopted any particular value for Pi, but became close to legislating one.
Archimedes was the first to approximate Pi as an infinite series.
Johann Heinrich Lambert proved that Pi was irrational in 1768, though it had been suspected to be for a millenium.
Ferdinand von Lindemann in 1882 proved that Pi was transcendental in 1882.

You are about at the same level of sophistication as the Chaldeans.

In Europe they celebrate PI day on 22 July. I am not sure I get this. The only thing I can figure out is that 22 divided by 7 is a close approximation to pi. Some other explanation?

I wonder how much stimulus money is being spent to take us to 1,000,000 characters. (Cool graph though)

You are about at the same level of sophistication as the Chaldeans. I'd probably be insulted if I knew what a Chaldean was.

In Europe they celebrate PI day on 22 July. 22/7 = 3.142857..., which is off target. Pi is actually 3.1416128...

Bad joke by our 7th grade math teacher:
“What’s blue and is between 3 and 4? Blueberry Pi.”

You got it. In Europe they specify dates as day/month, so we write 3-14, they write 22/7. Those Europeens are sooo much more sophisticated.

Thanks for the info. "Top of the Morning to you," "Cheers," "Prost," "Salut" and all those other words they use to mask their true feelings of inferiority.
Thanks again! (Danke, Merci, Danada, etc.)

Pi is actually 3.1416128... You flunked this test. See post 4 for a closer, more accurate approximation.
I am telling your first grade teacher and you will be forced to remove one of those stars from your forehead.

That’s number of digits memorized by a human.
von Neumann calculated pi to over 2000 digits using ENIAC in 1949. The million mark was hit in 1973, the billion digit mark in 1989. The current mark in 2.7 trillion digits. Don’t tell Obama what comes after a trillion.

Today is also men’s Valentines Day.
It’s not real family friendly but google “march 14”
It has something to do with steak.
