EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) -- A California Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius from 94 mph to a safe stop on Monday after the car's accelerator became stuck on a San Diego County freeway, the CHP said.
Prius driver James Sikes called 911 about 1:30 p.m. after accelerating to pass another vehicle on Interstate 8 near La Posta and finding that he could not control his car, the CHP said.
"I pushed the gas pedal to pass a car and it did something kind of funny...

I’m calling horseshit.
So am I.
don’t you just put it in neutral and brake hard, and as the car starts to slow down you steer to the side of the road?
Is it actually impossible to shut off the ignition in these Death Cars of the Future?
If the accelerator has gone nuts, putting it in neutral is the last thing you want to do, I would think.
I drive a 1989 Dodge Ram 150 and it does what I tell it to do. The milege isn't the greatest but what the hell, I can afford the fuel bill for now.
As for Toyota this is a hit on them because they are not union. And I believe anyone who owns a Prius is far to stupid to vote. My humble opinion.
Yes.
They're here and they're out to get us.
So you blow up your engine versus having a run away car?
I haven’t been able to figure out why people haven’t done this .... or turned it off so I looked it up and found an article saying to turn the ignition to ACC so you still have power steering and brakes.
“If the accelerator has gone nuts, putting it in neutral is the last thing you want to do, I would think.”
I would think it would be better to blow your engine than to crash - possibly crashing into others. The engines in those probably just sound like a mosquito anyway when they are over-revving.
Well, if you want to stop forward movement, that’s what you need to do.
People are idiots, why don’t they just turn it off right away?
I can believe the fact that a Prius can’t be stopped by brakes if the acceleration is going because the electric motor has a lot more torque than a gasoline engine, but I can’t buy that so many people are this dumb.
I may be missing something, but I don’t think so.
wrong,
it is the best shot you got
keep in mind that nowadays,
many cars use goofy ‘keyless’ keys
A Prius can do 94 mph?? I’m amazed and aghast.
Are those those ads I keep seeing on TV where it shows someone's hand pushing a button that says something like "start engine"? I've seen on associated with Toyota, Kia, Lexus, etc.
I agree. But you couldn't give me a Prius. I like some steel around me.
I drive a big pickup as a daily driver. I also have a old Ford (72) sedan.
They are reliable, and if they break, I can fix them, myself.
When a Prius is going 100mph the electric motor has long since ceased to assist the gas engine.
Maybe we'll hear that Algore's son, who was pulled over and busted for being drunk and high while driving his Prius at 100mph, will soon start blaming unintentional acceleration for his Prius problem.
