But the movie didn’t really fit the song.
The song clearly says “Threw Emil into the muddy water...”

I picked up a used copy of this CD a couple of years ago.....it's okay.
Good song. Bad movie.

Billie Joe McAllister got the narrator pregnant...somehow she is able to keep this from her family (who are obviously too busy with chores and such to notice). When the baby is born, she and Billie Joe throw the baby (who might or might not have been stillborn) off the bridge. Somehow the news of this gets to the narrator's father (the one who is asking to pass the biscuits and needs to plow "five more acres" that afternoon) who then proceeded to THROW Billie Joe McAllister off that same bridge himself. So it was the father who killed Billie Joe in a rage of justice - Southern style, protecting the honor of his daughter. And now here they all are at the dinner table, acting as though what happened at the Tallahatchie Bridge has nothing much to do with them. NOW that song finally makes perfect sense! Well done, sir!

He was precocious, and kind of big for his age?

The song clearly says Threw Emil into the muddy water... And drop them into the the muddy water. Flowers she picked much later after he jumped.
Best song to movie I've seen though is "Red Headed Stranger". The entire album was made into a movie. Willie played the part real well. Especially when the crowd was heckling him outside the church.

The guys tallent really was overlooked. Playing a part like Jethro would not have been as easy as it looked. Him and Jim Varney making some skits would have been funny. I’m glad Baer managed to cash in on The Beverly Hillbillies long afterward as well. I know a few Jethro’s and qute a few Graay’s LOL. Wish I had an uncle Jed though :>}
