Admiral Ackbar Ignites Backlash at Ole Miss

Admiral Ackbar is causing a serious disturbance in the force at Ole Miss -- where several Rebel fans are threatening to abandon the school if the alien leader becomes the new mascot.

The masterminds behind the Admiral Ackbar mascot campaign tell TMZ they've been contacted by angry students, threatening to transfer if the legendary rebel shot caller is voted to become the new face of Ole Miss.

The group has even received complaints from the parents of current students and prospective students -- with some even threatening to "never send their kids to Ole Miss" if the Admiral wins out.

Ole Miss hasn’t won much in the past 30 years and won’t be anytime soon.

You know, I kinda hope they do it, just to illustrate how ludicrous the overly PC-crowd at any college campus can be.

That and I’m not an Ole Miss fan. I think it’s hilarious in its stupidity honestly.

No wonder these people are upset. Are they out of their minds? They are trying to erase history, and that only makes people angry.

University of Mississippi dumped Colonel Reb — a caricature of a white plantation owner — in a 2003 effort to distance the school from Old South stereotypes.

Students will have two choices in the online referendum: yes, replace the colonel or no, remain the only school in the SEC without a mascot.

‘Ole Miss has been at the forefront of changes in symbols. In 1997, the school ended the waving of Confederate flags at sporting events. Then Colonel Reb was dumped and last year, the band stopped playing the fight song, From Dixie with Love, to discourage the fan chant, “The South will rise again.”
