He was her producer. He had her under contract early in her career. Besides he was in the closet back then. Closet gays tend to be quite promiscuous with the “ladies”. No attachments because everyone knows they aren’t going to stick around and no one will question them hanging out with the guys since they are so busy bedding the females.

I have 5 or 6 Joni Mitchell albums, but I’ve been drifting over to country music for the last few years now, so I don’t listen to them anymore. I liked her older stuff the best.
It could well have been a “romance” too. In the 70s gay men frequently had a girl. They preferred men but definitely had experiences with girls too, including marriage, fooling everyone but themselves.
