TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- State wildlife officials have created a special python hunting season to try to stop the spread of the nonnative snakes throughout the Everglades.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says anyone with a hunting license who pays a $26 permit fee can kill the reptiles from March 8 to April 17 on state-managed lands around the Everglades in South Florida.
The season is open for Burmese and Indian pythons, African rock pythons, green anacondas and Nile monitor lizards.

“they would PAY the hunters by the foot”
“They should pay a bounty!”
Careful, you guys are showing your age if you can remember when the gov. used to pay bounties!
If you're just sick and tired of crap from the little lady and those ungrateful teenage brats you've sired, make the hunt a family occasion!
I would rather it happen this way than hiring a bunch of slackers to stand around and talk on the taxpayers dime.
I don’t think many snakes are going to be found anyways. This is a joke. Do people realize how big the everglades are?
I started selling snakes when I was about 11, it was legal then. My idols were Ross Allen and Bill Haast. Ross taught my daughter to imitate a baby gator so good that we were almost afraid to take her out in public. If there was a gator anywhere close she could call it in, it upset the tourists pretty good!
Durn it! I am stuck up here in Mi. with no way to get down there to go out & get some!!!!
Maybe we should organize a freeper weekend in the everglades and see who can bag the biggest snake. Throw $20 bucks each into a pot? Wonder what python tastes like? Hmmm...
I would love to do this.
I guess that it tastes like chicken & the bigger the better for boots, belts, wallets ect...
Chicken, of course.
I’m past that now, can’t walk far enough. Gladesguru is already down there.
Pythons just need killin’. Anything that constricts its prey and swallows it whole doesn’t deserve to live.
INDEED. And find a way to pay a bounty—perhaps from leather makers for shoes.
Maybe Lucchese, M.L. Leddy or Paul Bond can make some nice Python skin boots?
Works for me.
Thx for your kind reply.
Oh gee, what weapon to use...
Autoloader 12gauge?
Semi-auto .308?
Ar15 with frangible loads?
Twin Ruger 10-22 motor driven gatling gun, yes there is such a thing. Electric motor though has to be custom mounted to trigger.
I’d use autoloader 12 gauge as most of this crap you see will be close range... sling the semi-auto 308 for any ranged work.
I like my AR15, but 308 has much more stopping power.
I hate snakes, the idea of shooting a python and not dropping it scares me to death haha.
If I were to use a broad brush, I’d say a comment like this was ignorance. I am an avid snake lover, have 5 of them myself, including an 8’ Yellow Anaconda.
Having said that, the ‘owners’ that are guilty of releasing their animals into the wild when they got too big to keep should be publicly beaten. Additionally, these released animals are a hazard to their non-native environment and should be eliminated with all due prejudice.
And eliminated not just because they eat without chewing, but they do not belong there wild.
I’ve lived in Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. Notice that not even I could stomach the county in between the two.
