The Weapon of Mosquito Destruction laser has now been demonstrated. The device automatically targets female mosquitoes and fries them with a laser beam at a rate of up to 100 a second. All this can be yours, once it enters production, for about $50.

Anyone planning on buying one of these when they come out for your back yard or camping trips?

See the video demonstration at http://www.bermanpost.com/2010/02/mosquito-frying-laser-video.html

From the CNN.com article about this technology:

"The research was commissioned by Intellectual Ventures, a Washington, U.S.-based company that was founded by Nathan Myhrvold, a former Microsoft Corporation executive.

His previous boss, Bill Gates, who funded the research, asked Myhrvold to look into new ways of combating malaria."

Great post, and extremely interesting to those of us in Texas and the Deep South.

I passed your post down the line to my email list.

Welcome to Free Republic.

Not as impressive in-flight take down of a mosquito as this:

I don’t know about that. I like Tabasco sauce as much as the next fella; but I do really like me some lasers :)

It's also interesting to us folks in Wisconsin, where we annually petition the state legislature to make the skeeter the Official State Bird (right around July). ;-)

That bad, huh? I guess with all that water, it makes sense that you have such a problem with mosquitos.

Ever seen video of the Alaskan tundra during summer? The mosquitos swarm like locusts, there.

Here in North Texas, we have lots and lots of lakes, so it gets really humid during the summer. It's perfect weather for mosquitos. If they've got these things available in the next few months, I'm going to have one.

This would make Steve Jobs jealous.

If the company comes out with thousands of apps for the Mosquito Laser, he might start to envy them a bit, but I think he's safe for now. ;-)
