My remembrance of the event was that a kid spelled it that way, Dan was a judge, and the card he had read spelled it that way. The media had the template of him as stupid and just ran with it.

It was a setup. Quayle was given cards with words on them. If there had been an internet then, the press wouldn’t have gotten away with sabotaging him. They’re trying it with Palin and the net keeps it from being totally successful.
