One cost more than £200 million, took eight years to film using the spectacular scenery of New Zealand and won 17 Oscars. The other cost £25,000, was filmed over a year in muddy English locations, and has not been nominated for any awards. But for Lord Of The Rings trilogy fanatic Kate Madison, filming a prequel was the purest form of art - a labour of love.

The film follows Arathorn and Gilraen, from their first meeting to their journey across a fantasy landscape where they lead their people, the Dunedain, into battle against orks and trolls. Orks?

Sounds great. But will the copyright owners sue her? Hope things turn out OK for her.

I’m no expert on copyright, but the story of Arathorn and Gilraen is merely touched upon in Tolkien’s works. I don’t know if taking the mere concept and creating a movie about it would really violate copyright.

Sounds great. But will the copyright owners sue her? Hope things turn out OK for her. I think Tolkien's copyrights have expired by now. She just needs to be careful about references to the movie.

That’s all fine till she tries to make .12c on it, then she can expect the giant metal fist of Mr. Saul Zaentz to come down hard.

Saul Zaentz owns every word, period and comma of LOTR. And he’s VERY tenacious about protecting his property.

I’m not sure I’d define “views” as a “fruit of labor”. Has she made any money off of it ... recouped her costs?

Orks? Daily Mail is a UK paper - the writer is probably flashing back to his days playing Warhammer as a teenager. The Orks are one of the major factions in this gaming universe, but are much sillier than Tolkien's orcs.

She’s an attractive woman, and is acting in the film. What she’s really doing is putting out a very creative advertisement.
Even if she gets sued, the giant ad is doing what it’s meant to do. Other actresses would spend that money putting new boobs in.

I’ve been following this film for a year, so exciting for us LOTR fanatics. Also a blow against the destructive power/culture of Hollywood. Spread the word, gotta support the independent film makers. BTW, is Andrew Levy our TV’s Andy Levy? Probably not, but it’s funny.
