Saw my first ad for a sub $500 notebook running Win 7

Just saw my first ad fior a sub $500 full fledged 15" screen notebook today....Just commenting, on the evolution in pricing. When Win 7 first came out, you couldn't find a notebook with it for under $700. I guess the OEMs have finally cleared out most of their back stock of Vista licenses, and PCs that can't handle Win 7.

I'll expect we'll be seeing better deals on laptops with Win 7 coming out soon. If for no other reason than to compete better with iPad prices. Why buy crippleware when the full real deal costs the same or less?

On the day Win 7 came out, I bought a Toshiba laptop for $350.00. I gave my Toshiba XP to my daughter. She was happy, I’m happy.

Where have you been? I bought my spouse a notebook for Christmas that had a graphics card, 4 gigs of memory, a 320 gig harddrive and full Windows 7 for $429.00 shipped.

Considering Microsoft has always had a back door for the NSA, yes you should absolutely Run LINUX, I have been running Ubuntu for a couple years, and will never go back to Winblows. Running Virtual Box for the 1 winblows program I need. All else is LINUX and I have never had any Problems at all. I will say that the learning curve can be rather steep at times, but in the end it is the way to go. The first thing I do with ALL store bought puters is to reformat and install Linux, you should too, especially since it is FREE and Superior

Lost in the woods apparently. And not paying as much attention to the laptop ads as I thought I was. Seems at least, I’ve not been looking in the right places...

Ditto - my kids have one each: BestBuy in early November; OfficeDepot in mid-December.

I am wondering if that would be too much overkill for my sis. She only checks email and plays “casual” games like Peggle, and the Reflexive company games. However..she also likes to use Mame for simple games as well, which is cpu intensive (not gpu). I am wondering if 400 is pretty much the lowest I can get a decent notebook for playing the Mame emulator (old classics like pac-man, galaxian, puzzle bobble, etc)

I work for a major three letter computer firm and currently run Linux (Fedora 12) with an occasional load of Virtualbox for MS Project and Visio. Everything else I do is done in Linux and Open Office (Symphony) I have more problems with the virtual windows environment that the entire OS for Fedora.

I also experience a few problems in Virtual Box running XP, but all in all LINUX is by far SUPERIOR to anything Microsoft put out, not to mention ALL APPS ARE FREE and Work Better. Haven’t tried Fedora in a long time, but I assume it is on par with Ubuntu.

Check some of the laptops at Tigerdirect.com. They have good prices. And their machines don't have a lot of the clog-ware that is on some other machines. [Walmart is bad about having a whole lot stuff installed on their comptuers.]

If you buy a netbook with Windows XP, its commonly assumed there's no upgrade path - because one can only do a fresh install of Windows 7. But there is a third party upgrade path option available with Laplink's PC Mover, which packs all the old files in a "moving van" someplace on the hard drive. You then install Windows 7, then reinstall the PC Mover software to restore the files and applications from the previous operating system. It makes an upgrade less involved and less of a hassle.
