In between being intercepted on the first play of the game and stripped of the ball on the last play, Aaron Rodgers was terrific in the best game of the NFLs wild-card weekend. But Kurt Warner was better historically good. He completed 29 of 33 passes for 379 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions, with a 154.1 passer rating. It was, by at least one measure, one of the two best playoff performances by a quarterback in history.
Before Warners big game, 10 other quarterbacks in the last 50 years had a passer rating above 150. But nine of those QBs did so in a game in which they threw 25 or fewer passes for fewer than 300 yards. Its easier to sustain that level of play when given fewer opportunities to mess up. Warner threw 33 times, while his team ran the ball just 23 times. The only other QB to sustain such a high level of excellence over more than 25 attempts in a playoff game was Peyton Manning, who completed 22 of 26 passes for 377 yards and five touchdowns, with no picks, against Denver in 2004. (Manning and Warner also have the only two other playoff games with at least 310 yards and a rating of 140 or higher.) The passer rating, incidentally, doesnt account for sacks, but both QBs were excellent at eluding the rush Warner was sacked just once for four yards, while Manning wasnt sacked at all. Rodgers on Sunday exhibited his characteristic reluctance to throw the ball under pressure, taking five sacks and fumbling on that game-deciding play.

The NFL sucks but I like Kurt Warner.
I’m a huge Warner fan but damnit! GB had that game in the bag. We always lose these last-second thrillers. ROFL
I’m hoping he gets past the Aints and meets the Vikes for the NFC Championship. A 38 year old versus a 40 year old QB.
Warner was outstanding. I really hope the Cards win the Super Bowl.
Whatta great game. A shame there had to be a loser.
A classic NFL barn-burner.
Exactly. The Geezer’ Bowl. Kurt is playing lights out’ football but Drew Brees ain’t no spring chicken either. More interested in watching Favre vs Homo though..
Any pro quarterback can have a Hall of Fame game when there is no defense.
Rodgers was brilliant as well.....he did get a head to helmet hit just before the play where he was face masked and fumbled....
I feel bad that it was not called.
so you Green Bay fans hang in there....you got a good one...
and Kurt....you're my dream qb.....
Packers were ranked #2 in the NFL
The only reason the Cardinals won was because the referees refused to call a 15 yard face-masking penalty that would have given the Packers a first down instead of the Cardinals scoring the winning TD. Two plays earlier they ignored another 15 personal foul. The Cardinals didn’t win..the refs handed it to them.
Warner and Rodgers were incredible.
It was some game!
Someone suggested that covered stadiums favor the offense. That makes sense to me. Removing random elements like gusts of wind, looking into the sun, etc. should allow an offense to hone their game. Covered stadiums are more common now than in the past and this may throw off historical comparisons between quarterbacks.
What a joke. They quit calling incidental facemasks 2 years ago. And that is what it was. They also ignored a late hit on Warner and an interference call against one of the packer DBs. So the bad ref’n was equal opportunity.
Warner was very good against a very good Steelers team (last year?? I forget). Big Ben was just too tough and I think the Cards had a call go against them.
Yeah Warner and Farve are the only thing of any interest in the NFL cause it sucks. NFL is pro-Obama and anti-Limbaugh. Warner and Farve playing at these levels at their ages is staggering. Warner in the last super bowl looked fitter and leaner plus younger than he had been looking when he played for the Rams.
It was an ideal matchup and both teams played it for keeps. The refs were inconsistent in my opinion but wow. I’m glad my team GB has Rodgers.
Uh, they allowed 51 points. Well, not exactly. I’ll give you that some of AZ’s points were scored on GB’s offense, but come on, that score was ridiculous.
Yes. I know. But this wasn’t the Seahawks they were playing. The pack was rated #2 in D coming in.
