Home PC, Vista, Windows, Comodo, Malwarebytes. Everything seems clean and fast. Problem: Example: Homepage opens, go to Fox, go to Drudge, go to Free Republic, etc. Here's the problem, and because it's more and more frequent, and yet random, I can't figure it out. If I'm at one of those sites and try to go to an external site, retrace my steps, or even open a post, it won't open and begins to "time out" forever. I had the same problem with AVG before switching to Comodo, which I love! (My son showed me how to clean the registry and all that.)
what is your browser?
Internet Explorer
Sounds like your ISP or connection, how do you connect?
DNS Issue, try configuring your DNS Manually.
I recommend Open DNS, it is free and it’s fast http://www.opendns.com/
Oh, the reason you are having this problem now and not before is likely you have the ISP DNS Hardcoded somewhere and your ISP changed the DNS IP Addresses and you have auto-forward DNS Disabled.
Long Story short, the easiest way for someone like me to tell you how to fix, is to config a manual DNS.
oh, one other thing, the reason you can get to the initial pages is that the ip address for these sites are cached in your browser and on the computer.
Are you using a firewall?
I always start by assuming that I have a virus. Get ccleaner from www.ccleaner.com. Run that. Then, over on the left hand side click on registry and run that program. If you are still having trouble download antivirus Avira from http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html
Make sure you get the free version and run it.
Clear your cache and temp Internet files. Everything.
Then install Firefox. Experiment with it and it will become more comfortable than IE. More features and free addons too.
I used to use AVG but they weren’t catching all the viruses. Avira does the trick for me.
I want to thank you and all the little people who made me what I am today..........
Thank you all! It was the ISP, DNS thing. Went to “START”, to NETWORK, to Network and Sharing, to VIEW STATUS, to PROPERTIES, to INTERNET PROTOCAL 4, to PROPERTIES, chose IP address automatically, chose DNS server automatically.
Back in business! My amazing son guided me there!
Thank evey one of you for your help!
How about Avasta (sic), is it pretty good?
Last time I flew, the man next to me opened his computer...started conversation...I noticed he was using AVG. I told him my son had me switch to Comodo. Turns out the man works for AVG!
Comodo found things AVG did not, and comparing AVG to Comodo is like comparing teletype to a computer. Love it!
Glad you are back in business.
God Bless and Merry Christmas!
Firefox eats IE’s lunch all day long. The only real reason to be using IE is for sites that optimized for IE or built for IE only(usually because the chump responsible for programming uses crayons all day).
With Firefox you get privacy options that are very Kluge on IE.
Fonts look better and when Firefox crashes it gives an easy way to restore to your last session or, basically, where you left off.
Another tool is the ability to get rid of LSO cookies. With “BetterPrivacy” Addon to Firefox you can get rid of the latest Super Cookies that enable all sorts of things including turning the camera on your computer without you knowing and worse. All the date that can be mined from LSO’s is staggering.
Once you have Firefox installed get “BetterPrivacy” and surf safer.
Search function of a page is conveniently located out of the way and way, way superior to IE search within a page function.
