Hi all. My 11 year old daughter has joined the girls chorus at her school. The chorus just decided its name will be "Las Chicas de Moda." My daughter doesn't like the name. She wanted it to be "Voces Scholasticae" (Latin for School Voices).
Question: does this name sound inapproriate? To me it sounds slutty. I've told her teacher we don't like the name but they are pretty much saying it's a done deal (the first concert just happened).
Any thoughts/comments/suggestions/linguistic or cultural analysis of "Las Chicas de Moda" would be great!

I am not sure how one could interpret this as being slutty?
If I wanted the name to be slutty it would "Las gatinhas"

Not slutty...Inane and childish, maybe, but it is a schoolgirl group. I prefer your daughter's choice.

It’s not slutty, unless there’s some kind of local-dialect spin that I don’t know about. The words just mean, “girls in fashion” or “stylish girls.” It’s a compliment to tell a person that he or she looks “de moda.”

Here’s another problem with the name. Look at the websites I found via quick google search.

Not exactly a good message is it?

It depends on what will displayed as "fashion".
Bared belly-buttons?

Sorry, my post #11 to you. “Chicas de moda” means “stylish girls.” Maybe they are, and maybe they aren’t ... I haven’t seen their pictures!
As a personal thing, I’d expect a group called “Scholastic Voices” to be singing excerpts from the Unabridged Dictionary or the Summa Theologica. There’s a fantasy book where the people do this sort of thing for entertainment. It might be “Fairest,” by the author of “Ella Enchanted.”

Yes and what of the girl in a few years who gets an eating disorder because someone says she’s too fat to be in a group called las chicas de moda?

None of my kids has ever attended school, in order (among other things) to avoid that sort of nonsense.
I didn’t say it was a good name, just that it didn’t have any untoward sexual connotations of which I am aware. To be sure, though, you’d want to ask some hispanic teenagers, or just use the term in front of them and see if they snigger.

What does it mean? Girls covered in ice cream? I don’t speak whatever that language is to decide if it’s appropriate, so I’ll go with what it sounds like in English.
