Sham:
Its the nature of the beast. The BCS is, was, and always will be a sham which is not as much interested in putting up the number one team against the number two team (or number three team and number four team) as it is in maximizing the amount of money they can milk out of their sponsors. Because of this TCU got paired up with Boise.
Scam:
No way does the BCS want to worry about Boise *and* TCU going undefeated, nor do they want a repeat of last season when Utah throttled Alabama and ended up having a legitimate claim to the throne. To prevent this both Boise and TCU will be denied a chance to show themselves off against one of the self appointed power conferences.
By putting #4 against a #6 (from non-aq conferences) and a #3 against a #5 (from AQ conferences) there is little risk of a controversy about who is #1 this year and a fight over who should be #2 will be just as much press but with far less controversy.
Grand Slam:
There is no reason to complain because at the end of the season there will be a non-aq school that is undefeated and likely ranked either two or three in the nation. The other team will still be in the top ten and the publicity this is getting will lead to far more exposure than either would have gotten if they were paired up with a team like Iowa or Georgia Tech.

At this point, I am happy UConn is in a bowl, the Papa John’s.:)
It’s a joke. TCU should be playing Cinn or Florida.
Why then did they allow Hawaii to play Georgia or Utah play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl?
Should be Texas vs. TCU
1. Texas
2. TCU
3. Alabama (barely beat Tennessee and Auburn)
Texas Barely “beat”* the Huskers...Maybe TCU and Boise for all the marbles
Everyone who watched the game saw who actually won..LOL
I think Utah slapping around Bama’ was the last straw. Previous victories did not create the Buzz that came up last season when a team who barely lost to the national champs was embarrassed by Utah a month later.
Sorry, Chad. I’m a Longhorn fan but your UT v TCU and then Bama 3rd doesn’t fly. Let’s remember that UT barely beat OU, A&M and Nebraska. How did those teams do collectively this year? Plus, Bama manhandled Florida. And Cincy beat Pitt in Pittsburgh. TCU had a bye over the weekend ... that hurts them.
The 1 and 2 teams in today’s BCS are correct and in the correct order. Then Florida, Cincy, BSU and TCU are a very close 3-6 (not necessarily in that order).
Never been to Birmingham, huh???
I live in Hoover, and it's a pretty good place to live, but Birmingham has really gone downhill.
Good advice...if you are going to the Papa John's Bowl, stay in a hotel far from downtown Birmingham (Hoover is a good choice) and take a bus to and from the game. You do NOT want to drive your vehicle anywhere near Legion Field.
I would agree with that. Based on the whole season, Cincinnati, Texas, and Florida would round out my top five (in order). Unbeaten in the WAC with struggling wins over Tulsa and Louisiana Tech doesn't impress me at all which is why Boise State doesn't join the other unbeatens in my top five list.
IMO Alabama was clearly the best team in the country for the first half of the season, then the Crimson Tide leveled out some and TCU took over as the best in the country for the second half of the season. Saturday's performance probably showed that Alabama has regained the "best in the nation" level but no one else has passed TCU.
Agree completely. Victory over FL was most impressive.
Hawaii wasn’t a real threat and Utah’s the reason the SEC and the other five BCS sisters are afraid of BSU and TCU. Why else has Boise had such a terrible time the last 4 years scheduling games with any of the BCS conference “big” teams. Boise is offerig to travel and play them at home and they’re still refusing. That’s an embarrassment to the big conference teams.
That’s why my idea is the only way, you’re going to have to force these games, the schools aren’t going to do it themselves.
Here’s another big sham. WVU vs FSU in the Gator. Shouldn’t WVU play the second place ACC team. That would be Clemson right? I guess it really is all about the $$$$. Bobby Bowden retiring and playing against the school that gave him his first major school coaching job. Let the dollars roll into Jacksonville.
Utah did an excellent job preparing for ‘Bama last year. They noticed that Alabama would adjust their defense, while the snap was being counted down. They also noticed that Alabama had alot of specialty defensive packages.
They beat Alabama by using a hurry up offense the entire game (I think it may have even been no huddle). No specialty defenses, no adjusting during the snap count. They did a good job. They out-coached Saban. He definitely has adjusted to minimize that weakness this year.
But this has nothing to do with TCU. I don’t believe in the transitive property in football. A few weeks ago, the Chiefs beat the Steelers...but it didn’t mean the Chiefs wouldn’t be mauled by San Diego or Denver, who were beaten by the Steelers. And using the transitive property across seasons really falls apart. Remember, Alabama wasn’t even supposed to be that good last year. They are much improved this year.
Looking at the match-up, Cincinnati seems more physical. I honestly feared they would end up playing ‘Bama. TCU doesn’t seem to match up well, and neither does Texas by the way.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Boise State back out of a scheduled game with Georgia after getting crushed 48-13 in 2005?
I'm totally skeptical about this rumor which I've heard repeated several times. If you go to the 11/4/09 Idaho Statesman article which really got WAC Commissioner Benson's comments into public view, you'll see there is no evidence of this beyond Benson's statements. In fact, the article itself says: "No one is naming names." In other words, total deniability. The article is full of speculation and no facts, other than the self-serving statements of the WAC commissioner.
My point was that history should have taught you to not be so dismissive of Mountain West teams. If Kyle Whittingham is capable of out-coaching Saban, so is Gary Patterson, and Patterson has more talent on the field than Whittingham did.
Looking at the match-up, Cincinnati seems more physical. I honestly feared they would end up playing Bama. TCU doesnt seem to match up well, and neither does Texas by the way.
Again, I sense that you haven't really watched TCU or you wouldn't have missed their physicality. All Gary Patterson teams take it to you, always have which is why most Big XII teams avoid TCU because even if you win on the scoreboard, the Horned Frogs will physically beat on you. Defensively, the Horned Frogs are big-shot artists and offensively, they prefer to soften teams up by running the ball right at the defense and then mixing in a passes to keep the defense honest.
TCU would make a better opponent for Alabama because unlike Texas and Cincinnati, their offense isn't one-dimensional. The Horned Frogs defense is better than either Texas or Cincinnati (and IMO by quite a bit).
There was was only one scheduled game against Georgia which occured in 2005. If there was talk of another game, my guess is that it wasn’t to occur in Boise, which may have been why it fell apart.
I believe that when BSU won the Fiesta three years ago, they began to demand more home/home matchups (there was a lot of speculation that Oklahoma wanted to play again, but only once in Norman and BSU wanted a second game in Boise). I don’t know if that stance is easing or not. Foretunately, BSU plays Oregon St, Virginia Tech and Wyoming next year. The main issue is that the WAC continues to struggle, with Fresno and Nevada having “mixed” seasons the last few year.
I hope you understand I am halfway trying to bait people. I agree Texas had it easy this year. But what are you going to do? I think they had a better BCS ‘score’ than TCU et al. I lived in Kansas when Kansas State was trying to crack this nut (several years ago). They needed a tougher schedule. But, they couldn’t get a big name out of conference team to come play them (not enough seats in the stadium equals not enough gate revenue). So, they had to travel to play tougher teams. They also arranged for some alternating games with USC, but used the Chief’s Arrowhead stadium, to get more gate revenue and lure USC in. It does take a while, and the athletic departments have to try hard, several years out, to schedule tough out of conference teams. Kansas State eventually failed in their bid to become a top tier team, as they could not sustain themselves over a period of years.
Oh well, I am salivating at the chance to play Texas...and admittedly, among Texas, Cincy, and TCU, Texas is the least physical. They got lucky. The Big 12 North was awful this year. Oklahoma was a disappointment. They even had some very beneficial officiating in the championship (to the point I think the Big 12 refs were rooting for Texas to get to the big game), but that’s football! But am I missing something - Cincinnati would have played in the big game if Texas lost, correct?
The BCS does not want to risk the embassassment of seeing TCU or Boise State beating say Georgia Tech, Iowa, Florida or Cincinnati so they pit them against each other. Pretty cheesy.
