What TV should I buy?

Posted on 11/04/2009 8:49:48 AM PST by navysealdad

Wife's TV went out. Looking for a 42 in or bigger LCD or Plasma. Any ideals what brand you would recommended.

Just bought a Panasonic 50” plasma. The cable guy who hooked it up said these did not have the burn-in. It’s computer refreshes and moves the pixels so that is not a problem anymore. Not being “smart” on the subject, I think it sounds plausable. Consumers Reports rated it a best buy, and we paid a lot less than they stated. Plus if your cable doesn’t receive 1080, you don’t need it.

I just put in a Netgear G-wireless with gig-ethernet in my home off my high speed Cox Cable service. I tested teh G-wireless against hardwire ethernet. The gig-ethernet blows it away. I max out on all video download testing for HD streaming.

Buy the lowest cost LCD that suits your needs for the next two years or so. The reason is because LCDs and Plasmas will be obsoleted by the new OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology.

Consumer Reports magazine or On-Line is an excellent way to select from what is currently available. Vizio is often the best value.

Thanks for the link. This $80/cable stuff is clearly profit center business model ripoffs. I’ve usually obtained my cables from “computer shows”. Much lower prices than Best Buy, etc.

IIRC, Dynex is carried by Best Buy and is often priced 20 to 50 below a comparable screen-size and model of VISIO. Wal Mart carries Visio and even in their lowest pricing on sales, the Best Buy Dynex model is cheaper.

Sony Bravia XBR. We've had our 46" for 7 months and it is one of the best purchases we've ever made. Got it on Amazon for a sweet price. Bravia comes in many models and we were looking at one of them at Sam's Club. For less money, we got a model much higher up the line. Amazon shipped to a local installer, who delivered the thing, unpacked it and gave us a short lesson on the menu. He didn't actually hang it on the fireplace, but we could not have been happier with the service.

Do your research. Even if you don't buy from Amazon, the reviews on the website are very useful and informative.

"You do not need 1080P unless the TV is 50” or bigger. You will not notice the difference."

False.

If you use the TV as a computer monitor, the resolution is everything. Plus 1080P is the current highest level of technology. There's no sense in buying less. Even my ~ $150 video camera does 1080P, so playback from that unit drives getting a 1080P.

Got a 46” Sony Bravia LCD in the living room and a 37” Zenith 37” in the Master Bedroom.
Both are hooked up to Dish Network HD.
Love both of them.
Great picture, never had a problem with either one.
Wouldn’t recommend a plasma.

Panasonic Plasma is the clear choice. Some great deals on G10 panels around. Amazon has this Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P46G10 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV for $1,115.00. Your humble poster bought two this Summer, and I prefer them over my Samsung LCD. The plasma picture is more realistic vs LCD, which almost seems cartoonish compared to the plasmas. Also, football games are unbeatable on Panasonic plasmas-- everyone in the know knows this...

Bought a 52” Samsung LCD (1080p) in May. Awesome TV with an amazing picture. My friends and family continue to comment on the amazing quality of the picture every time they are at my house. The movies on the HD movie channels and also on In-Demand and Blu-Ray look almost like 3-D. One of the best purchases I have made in a while.

I would also suggest doing what I did and buy it online. I did some research, went to the local retailers to look at the TV in person and then bought it from an outfit called Vanns.com. Saved almost $600 by the time you figure in what it cost in the local retail outlets I looked at along with the sales tax and delivery fee. Vanns covered the cost of the delivery and even dealt with me on some HDMI and other cabling that I needed (I purchased an amp, center channel speaker and subwoofer at the same time I bought the TV) since my order was about $4k. I figured that I saved about $800 total by purchasing online. Had to take the day off of work to meet the Fed Ex guy but that was no big deal. I hooked it all up myself and it worked on the first try.

"gig-ethernet"

Clearly the cost effective state of the art for the last 3 years.

I recommend a 15 inch flat screen Someday I may buy a 15 inch flat screen for rare occasions. I haven't upgraded my 9 inch analog yet which won't work anymore. What make do you recommend for occasional use?

"What make do you recommend for occasional use? "

Surf the 'net. Maybe get a 19" LCD monitor and a TV card/USB device.
