Take your pic from almost 30,000 volumes. Some in HTML (with pics) and some in .txt format.

All free downloads.

If you like classic literature, history or unusual books this is the place.

Good Example:

Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds -by Mackay

The Mississippi scheme — The south-sea bubble — The tulipomania — The alchymists — Modern prophecies — Fortune-telling — The magnetisers — Influence of politics and religion on the hair and beard — The crusades — The witch mania — The slow poisoners — Haunted houses — Popular follies of great cities — Popular admiration of great thieves — Duels and ordeals — Relics.

Unless you’re a regular user of the library, here’s a little-known secret: Your local library probably has scads of “free” ebooks. Anyone in Texas can get a library card at the Houston Public Library and probably other large city libraries. The amount of info online, including ebooks and research material (old newspapers), is phenomenal.

I await other responses to your inquiry.

Whatever you do, stay away from Ayn Rand. It will rot your brain. There used to be a site called Gutenberg Press that had a lot of free books. Not sure if still there. I think that is where I discovered The Song Of Hiawatha wasn’t just the “by the shores of gitcheegoome” poem. If you can find it, The True Believer, by Eric Hoffer(?) is to die for.

parsy, who is way behind on his reading

I don’t read a lot but noticed just about all the classics are available from multiple sources for free reading. I also just noticed the other day that the Sherlock Holmes stories are also online.

Order a cheap copy of Conscience of a Conservative by Barry Goldwater from Amazon. I started with it in 1962 and the rest is history.

There are a number of very good online sites for FREE ebooks.

I've found good books at; http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

and http://books.google.com/

and there are FREE ebook reader utilities that have enormous content including video, audio and ebooks such as;

Go to mobile read and look around. The deals and bargains section in their forums usually catches all the free places and the promotional deals, and they generally manage pre-release reviews on all the new electronic readers coming out.

My wife uses the Sony PRS-505

I use a smaller AZTAK Pocket Pro

Hope you find what you want.
