New Orleans Saints' Mike Bell sets the tone in win over Detroit Lions

If the plan is to slice Mike Bell's carries by 70 percent or 80 percent when Pierre Thomas is healthy and Reggie Bush is less rusty than he looked in the season opener Sunday, maybe it should be rethought.

No. Definitely, if that's the New Orleans Saints' plan, it could stand a revision.

Bell at least earned that much Sunday, in a 45-27 victory over the Detroit Lions, as he picked up from where he left off during the exhibition season, when he showed he was a keeper.

A career-high 28 carries for a career-high 143 yards gave Bell the kind of regular-season day he might have considered unattainable at this point in a 25-game career than entered its fourth season, with his third team. It gave him the kind of day he probably never could have had if Thomas had been healthy, and Bush had been able to produce something a little better than 14 yards on seven carries.

At least the Clippers can use competition(Lakers)as an excuse for their ineptness. They are the -B- team in L.A.

Once you become a joke to your sport it's hard to find quality help and no other team wants to be embarrassed by losing to you.

The Lions were an elite team until the Ford family took over...and turned it into a laughing stock.

I can only imagine what Barry Sanders would have been able to accomplish had the owners put a competitive team around him.

It's sad and pathetic...and will not change so long as the Ford family owns the team. Frankly they should probably just dissolve the organization...that would be best for the NFL.

As opposed to New York, which has two B teams.

I was proud when Berry retired.

So was I, though others thought he "abandoned ship".

What they don't realize is that Ford put him in a ship with gaping holes at the bottom.

Die-hard Lions fans, like Cub fans will keep their team in the toilet for an eternity.

I’m unclear on what happened. I listened to Mitch Albom interview the guy on the way in to class this evening. If but for not having listened to the “Morning Crew” on WRIF this morning, I really don’t have a good feel.

I didn’t know the season was “ON” last weekend; much to my chagrin I thought it was the LAST of pre-season.

Am I understandin’ they’re 0-1 now?

Forgive me if I didn’t catch it, but did Mitch Albom - sports journalist extrodiare that he is - ask if the team is practicing the “sudden death - two minutes to French Revolution Marie Antionette off with her head” play?

If not, then why NOT?

I’m sorry, despite the fact that “they left him upright” doesn’t cut it; when do the Lions fail?

IF Ford ran their car manufacturing business like they ran their football team: the country would be a world of Hurt.

I’m still thinkin’ ‘bout this...

I don't know from details, because I sort of went off football a decade or so ago, but I can tell you this: This weekend was the regular season opener, and the Lions lost. I'm wondering if the Lions could take on the Ovid/Elsie team at this point (go Marauders!).

The Fords, from what I can tell, are the Lions' biggest problem.
