Lincoln police nabbed a man at a public library where they say he'd been approaching teenage girls.
On Friday, police were listening at the 14-year-old girl's end of a phone conversation in which Mohammed Nadeem allegedly arranged to meet her at the library for sex.
And, they waited there to arrest him when he arrived.
They booked Nadeem, 4800 N. 15th St., Apt. 111, on suspicion of attempted sexual assault in the first-degree.
Prosecutors have not yet charged him.
In the affidavit for his arrest, police said Nadeem, 22, sat next to the 14-year-old at Eiseley Library Thursday and asked her how old she was, if she had a boyfriend, if she went to the library a lot.
Later, she told police he also asked for her cell phone number, which she told him she wasn't allowed to give out.
Uncomfortable, the girl texted a friend at the library for help.
When her friend approached, he left. But when the friend left after 20 minutes, Nadeem came back and allegedly handed the girl a piece of paper with his name and number on it.
"I will be expecting a call from you," she told police he said to her.
The girl's friend told police she saw the man hand over the piece of paper, then wink at them both. He said he looked forward to seeing them again.
On Friday, police asked the 14-year-old girl to call Nadeem while they recorded. In court documents, police say Nadeem told her he was going to have sex with her and agreed to bring a condom.
When he arrived at the library just before 2:30 p.m. Friday, police arrested him.
He is set to make his first court appearance Tuesday.
According to the affidavit, the supervisor at the library at 1530 Superior St. told police Nadeem was involved in three similar incidents at the library.
Eiseley Branch Adult Services Librarian Layne Pierce said library staff members are on the lookout for such behavior and have a policy to act on any harassment they see.
Pierce said they can ask a library patron to leave for any number of reasons -- and they can ban a patron from the library, period.
If someone tells library staff a criminal act has occurred, he said, they call police immediately.
Lincoln Police Officer Katie Flood said library staff reported suspicious behavior by Nadeem at about 1:20 p.m. on March 30.
They told police he was following young girls as they left the library.
Flood said police documented staff's concerns, but without a victim or specific offense, they couldn't cite him.
On Oct. 16, a 17-year-old told police she had gone to the library to use the computer, and Nadeem sat down beside her and began a conversation.
At one point, Flood said, he asked the teenager, who told him she was 23, if she would have sex with him. She told police she was offended and walked away, then reported the incident.
At that time, Flood said, the officer didn't believe Nadeem had committed a crime, so he was released.
The third library incident, which happened Aug. 2, was not reported to police.
