Jerry Beck and Amid Amidi of CartoonBrew.com are both libs are far as I know but Amid was curious as to why someone at Yahoo!Answers seemed to think the legendary rooster voiced by Mel Blanc was racist.

Some comments: >>Keep dumbing it down America! I weep for the future.

>>

It is extremely unsettling from today’s enlightened perspective to watch how the Warner Bros. cartoon studio so blatantly caricatured loud-mouth know-it-all white southerners in the character of Foghorn Leghorn. But we have to understand that those days were filled with tension, so the rascit undertones were everywhere. (you all know what the terms “Hubie” and “Bertie” stood for , right ? ’nuff said… ) It is comforting that we do not live in days filled with tension anymore and as a society have moved beyond such things.

And I wrote (my comment is awaiting moderation):

>>Ah say, ah say Kenny Delmar was indeed the voice of…the Hunter!…and from what I understand he was actually from Boston (as am I), not the South. Oh yes, he was Comm. McBragg, too. Quite.

Probably because he says things like “son” and “boy”.

Why is Foghorn Leghorn racist?

That's easy: cause he's white.

Indeed, as one of the other comments says:

>>While I agree the question is basically idiotic, hopefully there were good intentions behind it. Case in point: I work in Virginia. A few years ago, I watched a young female co-worker, conversing with an African-American male co-worker, say to him (in jest), “Don’t give me any trouble, boy!” He immediately wheeled around, clearly upset, and said, “WHAT did you call me?” I had to explain to her that the term “boy” has a history as a racial slur, especially in the south. She had no idea.

An episode of All in the Family showed conflicting reports about what happened when the fridge broke down. The repairman’s assistant was either an Uncle Tom or a black militant with a switchblade depending on whether you asked Archie or Mike (Edith says the knife is question was a “pen knife”) In Edith’s account, Archie calls the assistant “boy” and he turns around and tells him, “Hey I don’t like what you called me. I’m not a boy, I’m a man.” He was played by Ron Glass who would later play Det. Harris on Barney Miller.

And here’s me thinking that Foghorn just had it in for the chained-up hound! As he would often advise young Henry:

“I say, boy, I say now that’s a chicken!”

I’ll put that in plain English:::

“I know that the racial undertones are not there. But lets make some up. How can we find a way to make it racist?”

Ron Glass also played the mysterious man of the cloth “Shepherd Book” on the Sci Fi series “Firefly” and the movie “Serenity”.

Not only is he white, but notice how frequently he appears in that offensive “brown-face” get-up.

Ah!
I’m enjoying stuff like The Hunter (w/ Kenny Delmar) on an Underdog boxed set I bought recently. I was just at a cartoon fan convention where one guest of honor was Joe Harris, creator of Underdog and also the Trix rabbit. One segment of U-dog show was Go-Go Gophers, prob. considered not PC these days. Joe mentioned that Speedy Gonzalez also was considered not PC, but he said that some Mexican-Americans were asked about it and they said they had no prob with the character etc. (That being said, Gonzalez and the Frito Bandito were
later scrubbed from TV...)
