FILLMORE -- A former mayor, LDS bishop and high school teacher in Fillmore has been arrested on charges of having sex with a 17-year-old girl. Keith Gillins was booked into jail Monday night after the student came forward with the allegations.
News of the arrest comes after weeks of rumors in Fillmore. Still, it is shocking for residents of the small town to hear that the well-known 61-year-old coach, teacher, religious leader and former mayor of the city was arrested.
"He is well-known. He's done a lot of good. He's a good man, and it is upsetting to the community and the parents and the students and everybody. It's upsetting to everybody," said Millard County Sheriff Robert Dekker.
Charging documents state the crimes occurred in November of last year, but investigators are looking at the possibility of other encounters.
"The case is still being investigated. There are other people who need to be interviewed. The investigation needs to go much further, we just felt like this was the time that we needed to bring him into custody and let it go from there," Dekker said.
It was a relationship that police say was cultivated through the exchange of text messages. A high school student who didn't want to be identified told KSL the teacher and student frequently flirted at school.
"She would kind of always go in his room. He never let anyone go in his back room, but he would always let her. So, I don't know, like you could kind of tell. But it was surprising, just because he was a teacher and, you know?" the student said.
Gillins faces two third-degree felonies of unlawful sexual conduct with a 17-year-old. He posted bail Tuesday afternoon and was released from jail. He is scheduled to face the charges in court Wednesday morning.
What? Not a female teacher and male student? What a throwback. Behind the times. Not even eligible for “guilty or not guilty” based on appearance.
I have High School age girls.
You would not believe what some of the girls go to school wearing.
I am NOT defending the guy, but when a portion dress like hookers the temptation is there.
I Often find my self thinking if these student have parents who see what they wear to school.
I saw his picuture at the link, and judging from a woman’s perspective I would say he is definitely GUILTY!

It's flattering.
It's also tempting.
An honourable man ignores or deflects it. He doesn't pursue it or take advantage of it.
A smart man makes sure there are witnesses to the ignoring and deflecting.
I know what you mean. I’m a teacher and I lecture my female students about it a lot. “If you are wearing something that makes the boys look at you like this” (insert goggle-eyed stare here) “You should not be wearing that!”
Oreilly had something on about an 8th grade girl INVENTING rumors and posting them on Myspace about teacher, principal etc being pedophiles etc. I have no doubt there are kids who would do this in a nanosecond. To then actually DO SOMETHING with one of them and expect it not t come out, you have to have more than one screw loose.

I fail to see how the alleged perp’s previous occupations are relevant to the story.
That got around the school in a heartbeat.
Over the summer, no less.

A search of Utah court records shows Gillins has a 2005 shoplifting conviction in Provo. Gillins served no jail time and the misdemeanor guilty plea was dismissed after Gillins obeyed all laws for six months.
Perhaps the school district overlooked certain behaviors on the part of the teacher because of his “reputation” as a good upstanding citizen.
Ah, but it’s only accused right now.
When my daughter was 13 she had a friend who came on to me so often that I had to forbid her to visit our home. All it takes is a few words from some dizzy little female, and your entire life can go down the tube. Even if a man is proved innocent he will carry the stigma for life.
i graduated from a HS in southwestern PA about 45 min from Pittsburgh, in 1974. i had a crush on my physics teacher. he was married to the social studies teacher. after i graduated, i heard that his wife left him for the FEMALE gym teacher. i actually SAW them in downtown Pittsburgh shopping together [the two lesbeens!; )] Now THAT was shocking, back in the day!
we had plenty of lecherous old teachers back in my day and they were scary then just as they are scary now!

You'd think a man of his experience would know better than to even look suspicious.
