ZURICH (Reuters) A car traveling on a motorway in Switzerland lost all four wheels simultaneously, coming to an immediate halt in the middle of the highway, police said on Saturday.
The car had just stopped and the passengers had changed from winter to summer wheels themselves, a common task in Switzerland where there is plenty of snow in winter, but used the wrong nuts when mounting the new set.

Nah, that’s not it. That car is far too well engineered, and too successful to be an Obamotors machine.

Ever read about those E. German cars? They were banned from W. Germany when the wall came down - cardboard doors, canvas roof and a two-cyl. engine that blew black smoke like crazy ....

but used the wrong nuts when mounting the new set.I know the feeling. We just had the wrong nuts take over two of our major car companies.

Sounds like a bunch of college professors trying to change a tire.

How does one change tires and use the wrong set of lug nuts? Too, how do they not know they don’t fit?

It's a Golf. (VW, #1 or 2 car company, depending on the month)
 Some assembly required.

This is just a guess, but some folks use aluminum wheels for summer tires and cheaper steel ones for winter tires. The steel wheels typically use a lug nut with a tapered surface bearing against the wheel. Aluminum wheels often have a flat washer bearing against the wheel.
I’ll speculate that they used the tapered lug nuts with the aluminum wheels and it didn’t pull up properly. Now the odds of all 4 coming off at once are a bit much.

Some WHEELS do require special lug nuts. Like on Honda’s.
