John Wayne Bobbitt still harbours tender feelings for the wife who made him a household name by maiming him in a fit of rage.
The Bobbitts, who divorced after the infamous genital mutilation on June 23, 1993, held their first reunion in 16 years on an episode of the US tabloid TV show Insider last night.
“He keeps on leaving me messages or sending me Valentine’s cards or flowers, roses,” Lorena, who has reverted to her maiden name of Gallo, told the audience. “Maybe he thinks that we’re still married.”
Lorena sliced off more than half of her husband’s penis as he slept after he returned home drunk from a night on the town and allegedly raped her. She left the house with the severed object and threw it out of the car window into a field — where it was found and surgically reattached.
He was acquitted of spousal rape; she was found not guilty of malicious wounding by reason of temporary insanity. Reunited on-air, the couple argued over what went wrong in their six-year marriage. “John, you did a lot of things to me that were very painful,” Mrs Bobbitt said, claiming he had forced her to have an abortion.
“I didn’t really understand how sensitive you are,” Mr Bobbitt replied. “You take things really seriously.”
