Confederate Memorial day goes on. The dispute began Thursday after Auburn City Councilman Arthur L. Dowdell removed a handful of Confederate flags from grave sites at the cemetery, saying they offended him and others and were reminders of racism.

This article led me to several others but one I found interesting was the “uncivil-war” one of the reasons behind the civil war that is not discussed in our classrooms, might not be a bad ideal to show it the kids. You may have to cut and paste http://georgiaheritagecoutncil.org/sie2/commentary/scruggs-causes-uncivil-war030607.phtml This story is interesting because the author historian Mike Scruggs writes about Lincoln’s prospective on Union and Tariff taxes (Obama favorite Pres.) which also shed some light on state rights and Texas Gov Rick Perry latest remarks about Texas secession (think of the consequences). Also in this article are some quotes from Charles Dickens (state rights), Carl Marx (socialism) It is just interesting to read if you find the time.

I have read the Constitution front to back many times and I have yet to find the part that says Councilman Dowdell has a legal protection against being offended. They weren't his flags, they weren't his graves, it isn't his cemetery. He should have kept his mitts to himself.

That constitutes theft of private property. There should be a warrant out for his arrest.

Couldn't the case be made that he desecrated the grave? I imagine the penalty would be higher.

So, the Councilman feels he has a right to remove anything within his eyesight that he deems offensive—even from someone’s private property or the grave of their loved one.

Frankly, I find Councilman Dowdell—and those like him—offensive. And he apparently has a very limited understanding of all the components of the Civil War.

Of course slavery was an issue, but it was a secondary issue to what Southerners believed to be Federal infringement on Constitutionally protected state’s rights. Most of those who fought for the Confederacy did not own slaves nor did they particularly support the Institution of Slavery. What they fought for was what they felt was federal infringement on state’s rights.

Isn’t it interesting that the two biggest issues in America today are taxes and Federal Government cooption of state’s and individual rights—liberties, if you will. Deja vu all over again. It seems there is really no point to studying history because people do no learn for it.

It's not stealing if you are diverse, if you are offended, or if you are on the side of political correctness. Councilman Arthur L. Dowdell wins by default, and there may soon be a warrant for the arrest of the criminals guilty of hate speech by placing the flags.

The 2nd link I left isn’t working, so cut and paste scruggs-causes-uncivil-war030607 to yahoo search this is interesting if you like to read a different take of what started the civil war.

Absolutely!!!!
Neither the contitution, nor even the Bible , are meant to protect anyone from offences! Our response to that which
is proof of our tolerance and maturity.
This is the same claim of those that are offended by the message of Christ, and of God, that want to censor all evidence and presentation of that liberty.

What next, remove crosses because they remind him of the Klan? This idiot should be removed from office for theft. If not, does every other citizen have the right to remove things that offend them. If so, I have alot of work to do.

See, that's your problem. If you read it backwards at 33 1/3, you WOULD find it.

Read the Slave Narratives in the Library of Congress. There are many interviews with former slaves and a majority were treated as well as family members of their owners.

These people do not care about the constitution and not have any objections to ignoring the parts that restrict their one sided thought process. The bastard needs to be charged with whatever misdemeanor he committed fined and force to pay restitution to the owners of the property he stole.

Let Auburn City Councilman Arthur L. Dowdell come remove the confederate flag from my Great Grandfather' grave.

He will find himself flat on his a$$ in a heartbeat.

The next time Councilman Dowdell places flowers on the grave, or graves, of his loved ones, then someone should remove them citing the fact that they are allergic to flowers and do not agree with the practice of placing flowers on graves. Makes about as much sense as his reasoning.

I’m a yankee.

Slavery existed far longer under the current flag (minus a couple of stars) than it ever did under the Confederacy.

Prosecute this SOB to the fullest extent the law allows. Regardless of his feelings for the Confederate flag, he has NO RIGHT to steal private property, trespass in a graveyard, and desecrate the final resting place of anybody.

Not going to matter to this thug. My guess is that he doesn't honor or respect anyone but himself and Obama. He wouldn't "waste" money (not even our money) on flowers for the dead. Sadly, it's all about him.
