A second US-owned vessel with 16 on board is hijacked, reports say, as a standoff continues over a US captain taken hostage. How can the pirates be defeated?
The Somali pirates holding US Captain Richard Phillips hostage have warned that the use of force to rescue him could result in "disaster".
The US seaman was taken hostage on Wednesday after pirates hijacked his ship, the Maersk Alabama, as it sailed towards the Kenyan port of Mombasa carrying food aid.
Pirate attacks have been increasing rapidly in recent years - more than 130 incidents were reported in 2008, which has cost the world an estimated $60 - 70m.

Attack the pirate’s homes. It should be easy to track them down — they are the only rich people in Somali.
How can pirates be stopped?
Kill them.
Armed escorts with these ships. If that isn’t feasible, then install gatlin guns, arm the men with semi automatics.Go in armed!
Arm the cargo ships. Heavily. With ex-military that is well paid and well fed. Blow the bastards out of the water as they approach. Once or twice, word will spread, game over.
one well placed bullet will do it.
Turn a SEAL team loose on the goons holding the Captain.
Not exactly nice suggestions, I admit. But, when we did not nuke Somalia after what they did to Randy Shugart and Gary Gordon, we failed.
Kill them all.
Ummm...., make these other countries who have been paying “ransoms” for years to these pirates *pay us* to “rescue their butts”.... LOL...
Oh... and one more thing..., these countries have to come to the White House, on their hands and knees and beg the U.S. to help them out of the situation that they created for themselves... then we might help them...
I think the present administration would file a complaint with the United Nations, and issue a SEVERE WARNING.
Easy...arm your crew for petes sake. I think the whole world has gone dumb.
Every American movie fan knows that you’ve got to make them an offer they can’t refuse.
Hans Brix????
Hans, you're breaking my barrs here!
The majority opinion on the site is that military force should be used against the pirates. I think the Western world is stating to get fed up.
Also, don’t forget to make these countries — *pay us* — for rescuing their butts, since they are the ones who created this problem by paying ransom to these pirates for years.
First of all, make these countries and/or shipping companies pay us all the money that they’ve paid to the pirates up to now. That should be a good down payment.
Then these guys have to come to the White House, bow down and beg the U.S. to “rescue their butts” from these pirates.
After that, they have to pay the U.S. for continuing “protection” in the area...
That should about do it... :-)
i agree, put them to the sword
