SPOKANE, Wash. The quest for squeaky-clean dishes has turned some law-abiding people in Spokane into dishwater-detergent smugglers. They are bringing Cascade or Electrasol in from out of state because the eco-friendly varieties required under Washington state law don't work as well. Spokane County became the launch pad last July for the nation's strictest ban on dishwasher detergent made with phosphates, a measure aimed at reducing water pollution. The ban will be expanded statewide in July 2010, the same time similar laws take effect in several other states.

If push comes to shove, I would find it my duty to smuggle dishwasher detergent :) In Canada (and in Europe) smuggling ciggs has become a past time sport or criminal operation. Maybe the drug lords can grow tobacco instead of cocaine?
I wonder if organized crime will get involved in smuggling dish soap?? LOL
im stocking up
Most probably...
They passed the same regulation in Whatcom County, at the same time last year. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who stocked up on dish detergent at Costco, the week before the regulation went into effect.
I plan to switch to the dry type of detergent before this July, because I think it will have a longer shelf life. I plan to have a five year supply of dish detergent on hand.

You laugh. They will smuggle anything that makes them a profit.
Arrrgh, I just found out that they are trying to pass a bill to do the same thing here in Oregon. Damn dirty hippies...
Washington state law don’t work as well, they just want to keep up with the Jones (california).
The State of Oregon House is voting soon on a similar ban. The Senate has already approved it.
What it will cause is double the water use because dishes will have to be pre-washed before they are sanitized in the DW. More water and more energy.
BTW commercial machines are exempt because the phosphate free soap does not work very well.
Someone should launch an invasion and free these people.
Right now I use the Energy Saver feature on my dishwasher, and it does an adequate job. But if this law goes into effect in NJ, I am going to have to use the Extra Wash/Sanitary feature, which uses twice the energy and three times the water.
I’m not exactly sure what the greenies are trying to accomplish, here...
j/k...or am I?
whats next Dawn and bars of hand soap? shampoo?
big screen TV’s and dark colored cars
It feeeeeeeeels good, and it demonstrates their "concern". That's all that really matters with the libs, not actual results.
they are trying to establish that they are your masters in all things
I’ll give up my detergent when they pry it from my dishpan hands.
Be Patient!
It should not be so long, now...
toilet paper is next
