RIO DE JANEIRO - The current global financial crisis is "nothing" compared to the impact of climate change, Prince Charles warned Thursday as he called for urgent environmental protection measures.
"We are, I fear, at a defining moment in the world's history," he told a meeting of Brazilian business leaders and officials in Rio de Janeiro halfway through a Latin America tour.
"The global recession is far worse than any seen for generations," he said, adding that growing demand for energy and food created the potential for "political uncertainty in every continent."
But more menacing, he said, was that "the threat of catastrophic climate change calls into question humanity's continued survival on the planet."
He stressed: "Any difficulties which the world faces today will be as nothing compared to the full effects which global warming will have on the world-wide economy."
The speech was billed as a key presentation in the prince's commitment to environmental conservation.
It came a day before Prince Charles and his wife Camilla were to head to Brazil's Amazon to see human impact on the world's biggest rainforest, sometimes called "the lungs of the Earth" for its role in soaking up greenhouse gases.
Prince Charles, 60, and Camilla, 61, were on a 10-day, three-nation tour taking in Chile, Brazil and Ecuador's Galapagos Islands -- the research inspiration for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution -- meant to draw attention to the challenges posed by climate change.
The prince praised Brazil for the measures it has implemented to protect the Amazon, and described them as part of a new approach that dovetailed into the search for solutions to the world's economic and financial crisis.

Gads—I wish Chas would get a real job.
Idiot. People are losing their homes and worrying about how to feed their families and he’s worring about the environment. If I could, I would raize an entire forest if it got people a steady job and their paychecks back.
He makes enough through the Duchy of Cornwall, why not build a place where people can live and do chores in exchange until they get on their feet?
but I won't. I'll pass on the obvious remarks...LOL
Long Live the Queen!
Like nothing between those BIG ears?
Prince Charles could be a poster child why we fought the Revolutionary War.
It’s a good thing that Diana is safe in WI. This “Prince” is clearly a doofus.
Great Britian has their very own Al Gore.
I guess he actually is as stupid as he looks.
LOL!
Yep. That’s me. A ‘princess’ who never really got the life she deserved. ;)
He’s SO good looking...and SMART to boot! *SNORT*
Are we CERTAIN Queen Elizabeth didn’t do it with her brother to produce this guy? LOL!
“GadsI wish Chas would get a real job.”
Queen has enough to deal with (as does the rest of the world)
I knew there was something wrong with Prince Charles when he had an affair with Cammilla and later marrying her.
God Save the Queen!!! What a Royal pain in the arse. Let’s all hope, for the sake of the Monarchy that Wills carries more of Diana’s genes...
“Prince Charles could be a poster child why we fought the Revolutionary War.”
If he had been, we would have won by threatening to cut down trees.
Hey Charles, no one is listening to you.
As you can see, the lowest high and the highest high are separated by about 25 degrees even though the cities are only a few hundred miles apart. If you calculate the "average" temperature, you are going to end up with a figure that is meaningless to the people who live in Palm Springs and S. Lake Tahoe.
The same can be said of the lows. So how in the hell can anyone claim anything definitive about Global Warming.
When it's 135% in Riyadh and -20% in Reykjavik on the same day(sp?), you end up with an "average" temperature of what? 70?
Give me a break.
Selected Highs/Lows
Arcata...........52° / 43°
Bakersfield......70° / 45°
Fresno...........67° / 43°
Los Angeles......63° / 50°
Mount Shasta.....45° / 34°
Palm Springs.....77° / 54°
Redding..........52° / 43°
Sacramento.......63° / 43°
San Diego........61° / 52°
Santa Cruz.......58° / 43°
S. Lake Tahoe....45° / 32°
Ukiah............61° / 43°
Yosemite.........58° / 29
Looks to me like Chuck is heavily invested in these “green” companies and wants to make sure he gets his payout. It’s a good thing he gets to play with another country’s taxpayer $$$.
