A 35-year-old man died from a blood clot in his lung ten days after a tattoo on his leg became infected...

John Chillingworth, of Bungay, Suffolk, was given the tattoo on his right calf by his girlfriend as a birthday present.

His leg was swollen and red within two days and a scab formed. Mr Chillingworth had trouble sleeping because of the pain.

He visited his GP, who cleaned and dressed the wound and gave Mr Chillingworth painkillers and antihistamines.

Yet 10 days after the tattoo session, Miss Hahs returned home from work to find Mr Chillingworth lying slumped on the sitting room sofa. He was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived shortly afterwards.

A post mortem examination found that Mr Chillingworth died due to a blood clot in one of his lungs. It had come from a deep vein thrombosis in his right calf.

"Antihistamines. Antibiotics. I always get those two mixed up!"

Antibiotic wouldn’t have stopped the bloodclot.

Somehow the tatoo ‘injury’ to his calf probably created a blood clot in the vein (DVT). Clot broke off and traveled up to lungs creating a pulmonary embolism. A bit unusual that a tatoo could cause this but guessing it did unless he had another injury as well. If diagnosed earlier could have been treated with blood thinner meds and resolved.

Tatoos are graffiti on the skin. IMHO!

It is a fad. A pretty ignorant, self-centered fad.

The Bible says don’t do it.

Doctors would say don’t do it.

Removal is costly and incomplete.

And when one is older, they look like crap, and give evidence of one’s earlier stupidity.

I know that I would, as an employer NOT hire anybody where I spotted the thing.

In my earlier days they signaled either a guy who got one in the service (understandable), or a criminal.

A self-respecting female would not have such a disgusting thing.

Well, you wouldn’t want to overuse antibiotics. You might actually kill the bugs instead of letting them spread.

Even more amazing is the trend of girls/young women going around sporting “tramp stamps”

And in this case, it cost the arm and the leg.

Antibiotic wouldn’t have stopped the bloodclot.

The death certificate will read as follows.

Primary Cause of Death: Pulmonary embolus

**** Secondary to: Deep vein thrombosis of the calf

**** Secondary to: Severe cellulitis of the calf

**** Secondary to: Unhygenic tattoo procedure

A Primary Cause of death is what actually killed you.

The Secondary Causes of death are all the factors that brought about the primary cause.

Dirty tatto => Severe cellulitis => Deep vein thrombosis => Pulmonary embolus => Death

Dirty tatto + Early antibiotics => No severe cellulitis => No deep vein thrombosis => No pulmonary embolus => No death

I don’t have the knowledge you do. I simply remember one of my doctor buddies getting sued for malpractice because he failed to prescribe an anti-coagulant to a patient who died of a bloodclot. He won.

I absolutely agree with you, but I need to make one modification. You say, “A self-respecting female would not have such a disgusting thing.” Being of an Eastern background compounded by Catholicism, I intuitively agree, but I would say that nobody, of either gender, ought to get a tattoo.

Having said that ;-), I was getting ready to go out one night and had my curling iron on. I was fresh out of the shower and was waiting for my anti-perspirant and body lotion to dry, therefore nude. I turned around, the hot iron slid partway off the counter and scorched a cheek. Because of the way that a hot iron is designed, it looks like a 3cm. kissmark. I think it would look better if I enhanced it ;-). It’s brown; pink would be better. Plus, it imbues the expression kiss-my-tuckus with new meaning.

I don’t see myself ever being inspired to do it, though, because I think tattoos are a mark of stupidity (except for Catholics of my grandmother’s generation who had small tattoos of crucifixes at the base of their right thumbs, possibly to remind them to committ their hands to doing God’s work).

I was in the Navy, never got a tattoo.
However, I just got one last year (I’m 39).
I like it. Others seem to as well.
