San Francisco -- Hundreds of people who watched the Academy Awards from San Francisco's Castro Theatre on Sunday night gave polite applause to "Slumdog Millionaire" - which won best picture and seven other awards - but roared with foot-stomping standing ovations for "Milk" when it took the prizes for best original screenplay and best actor.
"You commie, homo-loving sons of guns," Sean Penn told the academy upon accepting the best actor award for his portrayal of the slain San Francisco Supervisor and gay rights leader Harvey Milk. "I did not expect this, and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often."
Penn acknowledged the presence of anti-gay demonstrators outside the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles and said: "I think it's a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect on their great shame and their shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone."
The Castro Theatre crowd was thrilled by Penn's remarks and his award.

"You commie, homo-loving sons of guns,"He left out terror-supporters.
Sean Penn = POS!
It’s nice that he acknowledges his audience for what they all are, isn’t it? And,yeah,he did leave out terror-supporters,but maybe he thought he included it in “commie”....you know how these humble,self-sacrificing Hollywood types LUUUUUV to keep their award speeches short!
At least he got that part right ... seems that the Oscars have gone the way of the Nobel ... Commies Queers Globull warming idiots and terrorist lovers need only apply
sean, as dense as spicolli
None of the other nominees ever had a chance. I could star in a biopic about Harvey Fierstein and win the Oscar. After all, Tom Hanks rode that unicorn to a statue, in his most inept, scenery-chewing role. He had a much finer performance in “The Green Mile” and was ignored.
“Joy in the Castro as Penn wins Oscar for ‘Milk’”
And fury by so many posters.
Fury?!
Are you on the right thread?
If Sean Penn is SO for queer “rights”, then he should set the example. He should forthwith divorce his wife and enter into a queer relationship WITH A GUY. Force him to enjoy that “union” he so much wants the rest of us to accept. And force him to stay with that guy for the rest of his life. No more women for ole Sean. What a POS!
I am sick of the “equal rights” argument... The law is clear - ALL men are free to marry a woman. And all women have the right to marry a man.
No-one is being denied that right. We all have that same right.
I wonder what is the rate of homosexuals in Hollywood and Yes I would count anyone who ever engaged in a homosexual activity, not just the ones who are out.
Yup. I could care less about the Oscars. I could not be bothered to watch the self-congratulating vermin. I was hoping Mickey Rourke would win because his story is about redemption, he took responsibility for wrecking his life, he credited his dogs for saving his life, never said anything bad about Bush and actually said something good abouyt Bush and he is a good actor.
I knew Penn would win because the very large and strong gay mafia in hollywood and in backlash to Prop 8. Every year it is some political agenda. The one year was about African-Americans where Denzel won and the half white female won - I forget her name. Denzel accepted his award and did not engage in politics. The woman went on and on even though she is half white. He can act and she is not very good.
I thought Hanks did well in most of his other movies, I especially liked Castaway and Perdition, the latter was a surprise.
The only reason Penn received such a loud ovation is because the audience is aware that the queer movies will win the awards and therefore most of the audience is comprised of fags and lesbians, which includes the majority of actors and actresses from what I can see anymore.
Let's just say that Sean Penn has a long ways to go before I'll accept preaching from him on things that he believes that I should be ashamed of. And if my teaching of my children is successful, they will teach my grandchildren in such a way that we will not be ashamed of each other. I have yet to hear Sean Penn utter anything that I believe to be beneficial to my children's teaching.
At least this movie has a happy ending!
