Chaplin Photos to be Shown for 1st Time

About 400 photos of comic great Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) will be unveiled by the Chaplin Society of Japan at the Third Chaplin Festival in Kyoto on March 14-15.

Some of the photos were taken at Chaplin's film studio in Hollywood and one is a rare shot apparently taken at a premiere screening of the film "City Lights" with physicist Albert Einstein.

The pictures had been stored in two A4-sized albums and all apparently were taken between 1916 and 1931. The albums went up for auction overseas in 1994 and a Japanese collector acquired them in 1995.

The unveiling is the brainchild of a society chairman and top Chaplin researcher Hiroyuki Ono.

The photos will be displayed at former Rissei Primary School in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, from noon to 6 p.m. on both days.

Chaplin - despite his protests - was a communist and probably a pedophile - forced to marry a couple 16 year olds rather than be prosecuted for statutory rape

He was a very disgusting man that helped cover up communist genocide in the 30’s

I don’t doubt it, but, that doesn’t mean his films are not entertaining.

I don’t know - not sure I ever liked any of his stuff - WC Fields, Stooges, and Laurel and Hardy were funnnny.

I especially like the one by Fields that would never be shown these days - he hits the lottery and buys 2 jalopies and goes around T Boning soccer mom type drivers who drive too slow, dont bear to the right, cut people off, etc. I presume he does this while enjoying a few cocktails.

Last weekend I caught a showing of “City Lights” and it is laugh out loud funny. I’m also a huge fan of WC Fields.
