Alien world is slimmest and fastest known [ COROT Exo-7b ]
New Scientist ^ | Tuesday, February 3, 2009 | Govert Schilling

Posted on 02/03/2009 7:06:30 PM PST by SunkenCiv

The planet, known as Exo-7b, lies about 390 light years away and orbits a star slightly smaller and cooler than the Sun... The method revealed the world's tiny size, but could not pin down its mass precisely. To do that, researchers must search for the subtle wobbles the orbiting planet induces in its host star, a difficult task since the star's own roiling activity can mask the subtle gravitational tugs of a lightweight planet. Nonetheless, it weighs in the neighbourhood of several Earths, which puts it in the running for the lightest exoplanet known to orbit a normal star. (A less massive planet has been found orbiting a dead pulsar, but its physical size has not been measured.) COROT-Exo-7b orbits its star in only 20 hours and is heated to over 1000° Celsius, making it much too hot to support life. But its discovery offers observational proof that small planets can exist at close distances to their host stars.

I’m thinking of switching entirely to dogpile for my standard search templates.

If you live to be 72 here, you would live to be about 31,538 if you went there.

Hopefully prominent Democrats will lead the expedition themselves.

I noticed that Dogpile uses Google.

How is it in general?

The bright side is, Presidential terms are only 80 hours long.

Dogpile *also* uses Google. I remember using Dogpile for a while years ago, but at that time my main search engine was AltaVista and I liked how that worked (at that time). FR’s own ValerieTexas was the first to mention Google to me (or at least, the first time that registered in my tiny little mind), and I tried it once in a while. Eventually it got to be pretty much all I used, and I stopped using the others for a while. When I couldn’t get Google to load one day (still a minor mystery) I went to AltaVista on the bookmarks and was shocked to see how lousy it had become; also I think it merged with or was bought out by some other search engine, maybe Lycos (another one I used to use from time to time). Google’s politics have finally gotten to me.

And where’d we get this notion that aliens are super intelligent beings? If aliens exist, maybe they’re dumb. Maybe they think we’re super intelligent. I don’t hear this position stated often so I’ll start an “alien are dumb” ping.
