I tried, I really did, to like KDE 4.2 I really didn't like the early versions of KDE 4. I then tried KDE 4.1. I hated it. I kept getting told by people that I just didn't get it.
OK, I thought. Maybe I didn't get it. So, I gave the last KDE 4.2 beta and release candidate another try for a month on one of my openSUSE 11.1 desktops. Historically, SUSE and KDE developers work closely with each other, so openSUSE is a great distribution for any version of KDE. Well, they may work well together, but openSUSE with KDE 4.2 doesn't work for me.
Just like Windows 7 beta, which I'm running on another PC, my fundamental problem is each desktop's fundamental interface changes. In both cases, I find that, instead of helping me to get my work done, the interfaces are actually getting in the way.

In any case, KDE4.2 is supposed to be released tomorrow. Which means I'll probably be using it in a week. WHOHOO!!

There is a resemblance, as I pointed out to a skeptical friend when I first brought up Win7. I’m not sure that’s an entirely good thing from either side’s point of view.
I still use KDE 3. When KDE 4 gets all that functionality stuff in there, then I’ll care to switch. Luckily, since this isn’t Microsoft software, I’m not forced to upgrade.
Hear ya...My KDE3 + Compiz is doing just fine for me..I have KDE4 loaded on another laptop and it is a friggen mess right now...
Neither one will run old Windows programs?
I went Gnome a few years ago...it was much more stable and easier for me to compile. I like KDE 1 and 2, after years on FVWM (remember that?), but even though 3 was slick, it was starting to get bloated then.
Actually one of the great improvements with 7 is improved backwards functionality with software and components, but hey lets not let facts get in the way.
I'd just be happy if they offered a cheap and easy upgrade from Vista to XP.
If 7 is equal to or better than XP, great. If it's merely better than Vista, I won't waste my money.
While there are some issues with it so far, it is a beta after all, by just about every Tech site I peruse, arstechnica, anandtech,gizmodo, zdnet etc.. the vast majority of the users are very impressed with it, this includes quite a few Mac users as well. It boots alot faster than Vista or Xp, and when it gets past the start screen you don’t have to wait for start up scripts to finish like in XP and Vista, it is already ready. While the layout is different from both Vista and XP it is alot more intuitive to me. The only issue I have so far is that my USB Wifi receiver doesnt work, but then D-Link hasn’t updated its driver since 2003 so no big deal.
I think you should try the Beta out.
I loved (and still use) KDE 3.5, 4.0 was unusable, and 4.1 was almost tolerable. Personally, I am hoping that 4.2 fixes up 4.1, particularly with regard to nvidia performance (both machines I use KDE on have nvidia cards). If it fixes the base issues like performance and features, then I’ll go skin hunting. I can’t stand the fake Apple look that KDE 4 is adopting.
How does KDE compare to OSX performance-wise?
I’ll not be changing out my XP any time soon. I hate Vista and Windows 7 does nothing for me, especially now since they won’t be including the classic start menu. Microsoft just keeps digging the hole deeper........
My problem was that I bought a laptop with stripped down Vista installed. Right now I’m using a boot cd with a thin Linux version (Puppy). Gets me from cold boot to FR in about 70 seconds. But I can’t get wireless to work, so I don’t want to wipe the disk and do a full install of something like Ubuntu (which doesn’t seem to be that much faster to boot than Windows, anyway).
My desktop with XP works fine, after I rolled back an update that destroyed internet connectivity and shut down the auto update feature.
That's a deal-breaker for me. No classic mode, no dayglored.
Now, to be fair, OSX doesn't have a Win2K classic mode either, and I wish it did. And to be even fairer, I wish there was a "Windows Explorer" for the Mac, instead of Finder (I much prefer the Explorer folder outline view). But the Mac isn't dysfunctionally fugly, the way the default XP, Vista, and Win7 GUIs are. The Mac does not piss me off every 5 minutes with stupidity, the way Windows does.
No way am I going to deal with the stupid Windows new-style menus. Gack.
With modern distros, WINE and dosbox are easy to setup.
KDE4.2 is just a user interface. It shouldn’t limit you to old programs.
