June 5, 2007 ATLANTA (CNN) Sen. Barack Obama said Tuesday that there is a "quiet riot" happening every day across America which could erupt like the riots in Los Angeles 15 years ago.
Speaking to several thousand people at Hampton University in Virginia, Obama said: "Those 'quiet riots' are born from the same place as the fires and the destruction and the police decked out in riot gear and the deaths. They happen when a sense of disconnect settles in and hope dissipates.
"Despair takes hold and young people all across the country look at the way the world is and believe that things are never going to get better."
The largely African-American audience of clergy interrupted Obama's speech with several ovations. Obama criticized the Bush administration for neglecting New Orleans before, during and long after Hurricane Katrina. "This administration was colorblind in its incompetence" responding to the disaster, Obama said.
But the poverty was there long before. "All the hurricane did was make bare what we ignore each and every day," Obama said. "All the hurricane did was pull back the screen."
Obama again condemned the Iraq war and also spoke about the need to raise the minimum wage and teachers' pay.

“Come on, feel the noise”
“Despair takes hold and young people all across the country look at the way the world is and believe that things are never going to get better.”
Yep - foolish people looking for Obama for salvation. I’m glad when I’m faced with the same situation I can cling to my Bible and guns.
We’ll get wild wild wild!!
Bang Your Head!
“Im glad when Im faced with the same situation I can cling to my Bible and guns.”
Well, I’ve read the Bible, and it’s a noble work. I’m a Christian, but probably not a very good one. But I’ve got the guns thing covered.
The primary incompetents, Nagin and Blanco, are completely ignored yet again. The Left got away with blaming the entire disaster on GWB. ....and tens of millions of morons bought it.
Yes.
Nah. 2007 story. But it does remind me of what Cynthia McKinney or Barbara Jordan or some other race monger said a while back. “White people riot every time they go to the voting booth.”
Well, O-scuma, I am locked and loaded for your kind.
I would take this as a subtle warning about what will happen to those who oppose King Barack and his army of “community volunteers” (ACORN).
BHO has spent too much time in Chicago.
He doesn’t need to ralley the Troops, he got the Job, now he needs to stop the Platitudes and begin doing the work of the hardest Job in the United States.
Once again, we give a minority dude the worst job in the USA.
The building a a virtual Gault’s Gulch will be a quite a quiet riot, 0be.
He said that two years, but you can bet that deep down in his faux Lincolnesque heart, he still means every word of it.
Obama was wondering why there's been such a huge run on guns since it became apparent a Donkey was going to win the Presidency? Well, this is precisely why. Law-abiding citizens need to protect themselves against Obama's crazed followers and gov't minions.
You think I have an evil mind? Well, I’ll tell you honey . . . I tell no lies.
Yes Bush got Blamed for all the failures of Katrina and he did not fight back and that was the beginning of the end for him..This is the one big area most all of his supporters have frustration with him about..that he elected to leave defending him to his minions rather than take on the bullies at this street fight. He was more concerned with the honor of the office he was in than to defend the occupant who was himself.
I like Bush, voted for him twice, Did not always agree with him but think him a good and decent man who absorbed slings and arrows only Christ Himself absorbed...but in the end..it did him tremendous harm and the party as well.
