The police don't get to decide who gets held and who gets released. It's a good thing they don't, even though some judges and some juries make some pretty amazing decisions.

And of course these days we have legislators pressing prisons to turn people loose so as to lower costs. We have to spend that money on indolence, addiction, and bastardy, so we can't spend it on keeping the streets safe.

They've dealt with this dangerous mental case before? Dangerous enough for the police to shoot him?

Then they release him back on the streets?

I didn't say they did. Obviously the courts released this nut job. I didn't think I needed to spell that out.
