LEBANON PA--Some people have called Meleanie Hain a courageous defender of the Second Amendment. Others have referred to her in online forums as an "idiot" for taking her gun to her 5-year-old daughter's soccer game in Lebanon in September. Hain said she is "just a mom who happens to carry a gun ... everywhere."
Hain agreed to an interview by e-mail. Following is an edited synopsis:
Isabella Hain, 5, gives her mother, Meleanie Hain, a hug before heading onto the soccer field, Sept., 23, at Optimist Park in Lebanon, Pa.
Only in America, I love this country. But for the gun experts, isn’t it dangerous to wear a gun in the open like this? Couldn’t someone just take it from behind you?
While I am a proponent of open carry, this is the nonsense it leads to. I have a CCW and carry it concealed, everywhere.
Where does this woman live that allows open carry?
Pennsylvania as stated in the article.

No, most are locked in place and you have to know which way to push/pull/twist, etc to get it out. She should be able to do cartwheels and it will stay there.
I'm all for it if the local deputy dogs would let you. They normally don't.
That's not nearly as easy with modern holsters. Plus I somehow don't think this woman is going to be too easy to sneak up on. Just a hunch.
I'm a big fan of open carry. It lets the bad guys no right away that they'll find easier pickings someplace else.

While showering? While making love?
Be careful with the word “everywhere”! :P
“I’m a big fan of open carry. It lets the bad guys no right away that they’ll find easier pickings someplace else.”
Exactly. Who looks at that picture and thinks, “I bet I can threaten her.”
A: Like it or not, I do not have to validate myself to the public for my actions, ... I have come to the conclusion that this is an impossible task. It may sound arrogant, but ... the Constitution has guaranteed me a right, and there is nothing more to say about it. People who say, 'You do not need a gun at a soccer field,' ... I wonder if they could tell me when I will need it? That way I could just avoid that time and place.
You GO GIRL!!

If you support open carry I could not tell it by you call someone doing so legally an idiot. Gunowners are their own worst enemy. Heck Gays never budge on their supposed rights and gunowner pee their pants.
Do you think it is wrong for police officers to carry openly?
What about the little 5’2” waifs they hire nowadays in the name of “diversity”? Are they really any more qualified than an armed citizen?
Hell.Why not?
I’m planning on taking the Arizona Concealed Carry class this month. I’m also “just a mom”. Not sure that I’ll carry it everywhere, but I want to have the option available, legally.
This gal is exercising the most vital of our constitutional rights and yet contributors to this site and self-proclaimed “conservatives” seem uneasy, even embarrassed by her actions. Thank goodness there are people like her...that is, those who have the guts to actually do what far too many only pontificate about.
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
First of all, I never called anyone an idiot, don't put words in my mouth, and if she was carrying concealed, she would not have the problem she has now. Thats why my state says, it must be concealed if carried.
She should, as many others have found out the hard way, contacted her local sheriff to see what "he who controls the permits" thought about it.
You have a perfectly legal right to go wandering around "the Hood" at 2am, but don't be surprised when you get knocked in the head.
And for the record, I don't believe you should have to have a license at all to fish, hunt, CCW. Its all just a tax.
I’m a big fan of open carry.

I am too!
I applied for a conceal carry permit last month. It should arrive soon. I plan to carry my revolver or have beside my bed at all times.
I am already getting my wardrobe ready to fit the revolver.
marktwain replies:
I presume that your state is Alabama. If so, the attorney general has issued an opinion that open carry is legal and that no permit is required. See the link:

However, a permit is required to carry a handgun in a vehicle.
I applaud Meleanie Hain’s actions. I wish that many more will emulate her.
I support open carry although rarely do it myself. I believe firearms are more useful if they don’t know you have one.
That said the CCW is becoming a license to possess a firearm. That is wrong IMO. Its spreading the belief that you have to have a ‘license’ to carry a firearm. Soon it will be required to even own one.
