Ping!

Spouse and I are talking about opening a “craft” type of business for the write-offs (if BO leaves any). Spouse is good at woodworking, reloading and handy-man stuff and I can sew anything including beading, clothes, mending, embroidery and quilting. Having a business license would save us a ton on supplies.

I haven’t been unemployed in a while. The last time I was down-and-out was in Michigan in the late 1980s. There was 15% unemployment in my area, and things were grim, grim, grim. I did retail, food service, dishwashing and (Heaven help me) door-to-door vacuum cleaner sales.

Finally I got hold of a typewriter, taught myself to type 70 wpm, read the manuals on WANG wordprocessors, and went down to a Temporary Agency (Manpower). I had work every day for the next six months.

The pay was pretty lousy, about one and a half times the minimum wage, but at least I was on the positive side of the ledger. I showed up for work ten minutes early every day, well dressed and groomed and ready to give a full day’s work. I had a few fill in assignments, but every long-term gig I had wound up with an offer of full-time employment at a significant increase in pay. I did not want to do that type of work long-term, so I wound up turning them down.

I did that for about a year, until something better came along. I guess I could have sat on my butt for that year, but that wouldn’t have done me any good, and I would have been about $15K poorer. I still had time in the morning to check the papers and type up response letters to include with my resume. Working full time did not slow down my job search at all.

My eventual employer was a start-up. I was his first full-time employee. He said that it was the resume, with the Manpower time listed first, above all the “legitimate” experience and educational qualifications, that convinced him that I was the right person for the job, and that I could do whatever it took to get his business off the ground.

Looking for work here in North TX. I am an information technology engineer, with 10 years experience. I hold the MCSE: 2003 certification and the CCNA. I have a Master’s degree in Information Assurance, and have a CISSP certification as well. I know Windows environments, Cisco and HP networking, EMC SAN storage, and plenty of other technologies. I have been out of work since Dec ‘08. TX has one of the strongest economies of any state around, so there’s not much point in my moving. The only other area where my skills are in demand is DC and I can’t afford to relocate there, due to cost of living and the fact that I would lose my current level of custody of my daughter. Anyone have a line on a good place to work in the Dallas/Fort Worth area?

If any North Texas Freepers are reading this thread, I’d like to offer my services to you.

I own and operate a rain gutter and sheet metal business with my wife. We’ve been in business now for about 14 years. I specialize in first quality steel and copper gutter systems. You might call me “old school”, because I learned the trade when it was still a recognized expert profession.

The competition from semi-skilled illegal labor, and the introduction of cheesy modular aluminum gutter systems has nearly destroyed my trade, but I’m still here.

Naturally, my rates are much lower than they ought to be, because of the cut-throat competition out there, but I have a family to feed, and I’m willing to swallow my professional pride to care for them.

I’m currently offering my gutter cleaning and repair services at a low flat rate for any house. I do that job the old fashioned, professional way, too.

I am posting to this thread because I am in desperate need of work at this point. If you, or anyone you know is in need of my services, please Freepmail me. I would very much appreciate it.

I work the entire DFW area.

Thank you,
Windflier
